Consultant Physician – Geriatric Medicine

Location: University Hospital Galway, HSE West & North West Region.
This is a 37‑hour per week appointment on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023.
Main Duties of the Job
The post delivers specialist acute care, including in‑patient care in general internal medicine, acute geriatric medicine, stroke medicine, frailty at the front door, geriatric medicine specialist consults, long‑term care planning, ortho‑geriatric care, falls assessment, rehabilitation and integrated care across hospital and community/outpatient settings.
Teaching and Research
Teaching duties, if required by the University of Galway, will be agreed between the consultant, the HSE West & North West Region, and the University governing body. Research will also be carried out.
Management & Administration
Work within the hospital’s service plan and/or levels of service, as determined by the Employer.
Maintain liaison arrangements between the department and patients’ normal medical attendants.
Collaborate with hospital management, nursing directors, medical and surgical staff to promote general efficiency of the hospital.

Rapid expansion of services in Geriatric and Stroke Medicine has led to specialist wards, frailty services, orthogeriatric care, falls & syncope services, rehabilitation, integrated care programmes and specialist neurocognitive services across acute and community care.
Additional Details
The appointment is whole‑time, permanent and pensionable. Salary is as per the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Standard working week: 37 hours per week. Annual leave: 30 working days.
