Our Purpose

At our Packaging & Labelling (P&L) Engineering Department in Medtronic, plc, we focus on the development of cutting-edge medical device packaging in the Vascular & Implant Therapies Space. Our P&L Engineers support a broad array of continuous improvement and sustaining initiatives and are directly involved in the development of innovative packaging for use in medical procedures.

A Day in The Life Of:

* Work as part of a cross functional team supporting packaging sustaining, continuous improvement initiatives and R&D projects.

* Draft technical documentation, including specifications, package testing protocols, and validation associated with the qualification and release of package designs.

* To develop packaging products for use in medical procedures as defined/required by the business needs of the company.

* Participate on cross-functional, cross-site project teams focusing on packaging, packaging technology and continuous improvement initiatives.

* Participate in sub-task activities as directed form the core team for a particular project.

* Support process development, process validation and characterization activities for technology transfers and process improvement initiatives.

* Effectively represent Medtronic Vascular externally with our Vendors.

* Liaise with external technical engineering specialists on technology opportunities for P&L and R&D programs.

* Liaise with and support the Sterilization Group on project deliverables for Sterilization Validation activities.

* To document design/development/test activities as required in Engineering Laboratory notebooks.

* To support the introduction/implementation of product/process/materials changes to the manufacturing operation.

Key Skills & Experience

* Qualified person with a Level 7 degree in Engineering or a related discipline.

* Promotes and practices a culture of integrity, ethics and compliance with laws and policies.

* Collaborates across organizational boundaries.

* Translates complexity into simplicity and articulates crisply and clearly.

* Creates and communicates clear strategy/plan.

* Demonstrates good judgement.

* Be passionate and driven, with the ability to making tough decisions in difficult situations.

* Material Selection: Understanding different types of packaging materials such as plastics, paper, metals, and glass, and their properties in terms of strength, durability, and environmental impact.

* Structural Design: Ability to create effective packaging structures that ensure product protection, ease of transportation, and efficient use of materials.

* Manufacturing Processes: Knowledge of various manufacturing processes such as thermoforming, extrusion, and folding carton production, and how they impact packaging design.

* Packaging Machinery: Familiarity with different packaging machinery and equipment used in manufacturing and automation, such as filling machines, sealing equipment, and labeling machines.

* Quality Assurance: Understanding quality control processes, testing methodologies, and standards to ensure packaging meets safety, durability, and regulatory requirements.

* Sustainability and Environmental Awareness: Knowledge of sustainable packaging practices, recycling, biodegradable materials, and reducing the environmental footprint of packaging.

* Prototyping and Testing: Ability to create prototypes of packaging designs and conduct various tests (drop tests, compression tests, etc.) to ensure packaging meets performance criteria.

* Computer Skills: Competency in using software tools for documentation, project management, data analysis, and communication.

* Safety and Compliance Testing: Understanding of testing methodologies for assessing packaging safety, including child-resistant packaging and tamper-evident features.

* Understanding of Packaging Regulations: Knowledge of international packaging regulations and standards, such as ISO and ASTM, to ensure compliance in various markets.
