This varied role will involve maintaining and calibrating highly sensitive gas analysers and other environmental equipment, preparing and refining standard operating procedures, and collecting soil and water samples in diverse environments. The candidate will also contribute to preparing time-series data and geospatial analyses, and play a key role in developing and implementing robust QA/QC procedures to ensure the highest standards in our research. The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following: Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Undertake, as part of a two person team, high-resolution measurements of carbon exchange, including both CO2 and CH4 gases, across multiple peatlands. This will involve travel to and from remote locations to perform in-situ measurements using a LI-7810 infrared trace gas analyser and static chambers. Responsibilities will also include organised gathering of high-quality data from these measurements, as well as from eddy covariance towers and other meteorological in-situ sensors on remote sites. Hydro-meteorological Equipment Support the calibration, maintenance, and operational verification of instrumentation used to measure hydro-meteorological variables and GHG fluxes. Duties will include regular site visits for equipment inspection, liaison with third-party suppliers, and the integration and quality control of meteorological datasets collected via on-site environmental monitoring stations. Soil and Water Sampling Undertake, as part of a two person team, the collection of soil and water samples in accordance with established scientific protocols, including the extraction of peat cores using a peat auger. Ensure the preservation, labelling, and chain-of-custody documentation of all samples prior to transport to accredited laboratories. Spot sampling of peat drainage channels may also be conducted as required for supplementary analyses.
