Overview
MachineLab designs and delivers high-performance automation systems for the pharmaceutical and life sciences sector.
We are a mechanically focused automation company, and we're seeking an Electrical, Pneumatic & Commissioning Engineer to take ownership of the full build readiness of our machines — ensuring that every system is electrically, pneumatically, and mechanically complete before software integration begins.
This is a hands-on, project-driven role with strong opportunities for growth into Supervisory or Engineering Management positions as the company continues to expand.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Specification
* Lead the design and specification of all electrical and pneumatic systems on bespoke automation machinery.
* Select, source, and manage components such as PLCs, drives, HMIs, safety devices, solenoid valves, sensors, cylinders, and flow control hardware.
* Monitor stock components and proactively manage shortages or alternates with the supply chain.
* Ensure all electrical and pneumatic schematics are fully up to date, properly labelled, and ready for build.
* Define power and air requirements and ensure these are clearly communicated in engineering layouts.
Build & Integration
* Supervise electrical panel build, wiring, and pneumatic plumbing on the shop floor.
* Verify that every signal, sensor, and actuator is correctly installed and tested prior to software handover.
* Work directly with the Software Engineer to ensure IO, control logic, and motion systems are aligned with mechanical and pneumatic designs.
* Maintain consistent standards for build quality, safety compliance, and documentation.
Commissioning & Testing
* Lead electrical and pneumatic checkout and system commissioning.
* Conduct full FATs and SATs — independently or as part of a team.
* Troubleshoot and resolve issues across electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical domains.
* Perform testing for:
* E-stop, guard, and safety recovery
* Air pressure, flow rate, and speed limits
* Interface and signal exchange with upstream/downstream equipment
* Alarms, warnings, and power recovery conditions
* Conduct pre-FATs and stress testing under simulated production conditions.
Customer & Project Interaction
* Liaise directly with customers during FAT, SAT, and on-site installations.
* Represent MachineLab professionally in all client communications.
* Support installation and commissioning at customer sites (domestic and international).
* Provide technical feedback during design reviews, risk assessments, and continuous improvement sessions.
Leadership & Progression
This role is designed for an engineer ready to take ownership and grow into a Supervisory or Engineering Manager position.
Progression will include:
* Leading electrical/pneumatic build teams.
* Overseeing multiple projects concurrently.
* Developing standard design practices and build checklists.
* Mentoring junior engineers and apprentices.
* Supporting project management with technical scope and scheduling input.
MachineLab actively supports professional development and provides structured pathways for engineers ready to step into leadership roles.
Essential Requirements
* Degree or HND in Electrical, Mechatronic, or Automation Engineering (or equivalent experience).
* Hands-on experience in electrical and pneumatic design, wiring, and commissioning.
* Strong understanding of industrial control systems, pneumatics, and machine safety.
* Ability to read and produce electrical/pneumatic schematics and specify components correctly.
* Experience managing part specifications, stock tracking, and supplier coordination.
* Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
* Strong communication and teamwork skills.
* Willingness to travel for installations and commissioning.
Desired Requirements
* Experience in pharmaceutical or regulated automation environments.
* Familiarity with validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) requirements.
* Knowledge of servo motion, Ethernet/IP, or Profinet systems.
* Experience preparing CE marking documentation.
* Capable of delivering operator training and technical support post-installation.
