(IUA Research Assistant Scale point 5 as at 01/02/2026) SETU are currently seeking a Research Assistant to join the Department of Land Sciences at SETU, to work on the Atlantic area project Resilcrops.
RESILCROPS adopts a circular economy approach by developing biostimulants from two key resources: algae that accumulate along Atlantic coasts and whey protein waste, a by-product of the dairy industry.
The RESILCROPS project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme ********* The research assistant will set up and manage a grass clover plot trial and manage the data from harvest from this trial until Febuary ****.
They will participate in the RESICROPs projects involving France, Spain, Portugal, Madiera and Tenerife.
Experience of field work and a background in science or agricultural science will be essential.
They will be part of the team at Land Sciences SETU Waterford.
The post is commencing at IUA research assistant grade.
The project adopts a circular economy approach by developing biostimulants from two key resources: algae that accumulate along Atlantic coasts and whey protein waste, a by-product of the dairy industry.
This solution will improve the crop tolerance to water stress while valorising natural by-products.
Our previous studies indicate that marine algae extracts can save up to 50% of water while maintaining the productivity of key crops.
The research assistant in Ireland will assess some of these products on more regional crops such as grass clover swards under wet conditions as part of the project and report to the project team in collaboration with the Irish principal investigator.
