We are expanding and need a motivated
Senior Photonics Design Engineer
to join our team in Galway, Ireland.
What You'll Do
Take an active role in the full Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) development lifecycle, from concept to validation.
Define and track requirements and specifications in alignment with system-level or customer goals, collaborating with design, fabrication, packaging, and test engineering.
Design and optimise complex active and passive large-scale PICs at the system, device, and component level.
Propose and implement innovative design solutions across multiple technology domains, including assembly, integration, and testing of photonics from component package to system level.
Design, source, and simulate photonic components and PICs, including related electronics and packaging.
Lay out photonic devices and simulate circuits with CAD tools such as Lumerical, Nazca Design, and Klayout.
Implement and improve in-house design toolsets, quality and traceability procedures, and DRC scripts to enable PIC design workflow.
Perform hands-on testing of PICs at die level and in system.
Evaluate design solutions with simulations and compare with test data.
Plan and execute component and photonic system tests.
Work with foundries and manufacturers to plan and monitor research co-developments, prototyping, and production timelines.
Present verbal and written findings to cross-functional teams, supervising other photonics designers and intern students.
Contribute to our IP portfolio.
Collaborate with a team of photonic designers, nanofabrication engineers, test engineers, and physicists.
Who You Are
M Sc.
or Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics, Photonics, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in the design and testing of photonic components such as lasers, photodiodes, or modulators.
Proficient in Python and scientific libraries (NumPy, Pandas, SciPy); familiarity with Linux environments is an asset.
Strong knowledge of numerical simulation methods used in photonics (FDTD, EME, FDE, FEM, time/frequency-domain circuit solvers).
Familiar with photonic test methods and willing to perform hands-on device testing when required.
Excellent analytical and data presentation abilities, with attention to clarity and precision.
Comfortable filling a variety of roles in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.
Proven ability to meet strict deadlines and deliver high-quality results.
Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
High attention to detail and a strong commitment to accurate engineering.
