Description
Purpose of the Post
The Pre-Assessment Clinic operates based on evidence-based policies and protocols, including guidelines on anticoagulation bridging, consent, safe site surgery, and preoperative assessment, adhering to hospital policies that support best practices.
The CNM 2 in Pre-Assessment provides clinical and managerial leadership, collaborating with consultants, anaesthesia, Day Surgery, and outpatient departments to optimize day care facilities and patient care.
This role involves conducting comprehensive pre-operative nursing assessments, evaluating patient suitability for anesthesia or sedation, and liaising with multidisciplinary teams to ensure pre-operative health optimization and seamless care coordination.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1) Professional / Clinical
* Manage patient care to high professional standards using evidence-based approaches
* Provide professional and clinical leadership
* Coordinate, assess, plan, deliver, and review patient care in Day Surgery and OPD
* Deliver safe, comprehensive nursing care following professional guidelines
* Participate in team meetings and collaborate across healthcare teams
* Perform and document pre-operative assessments, including history, health screening, investigations, and patient advice
* Coordinate investigations and communicate abnormalities
* Exercise clinical judgment regarding patient suitability for surgery
* Promote lifestyle changes and liaise with GPs and clinicians
* Ensure accurate records and adhere to standards of confidentiality and legislation
* Participate in quality assurance, audits, and research
* Implement health promotion programs
* Identify and manage risks within the scope of practice
* Support sustainable energy, water, and waste initiatives
3) Education & Training
* Maintain accurate records for audits and service evaluation
* Engage in professional development and research
* Supervise and assess student nurses
* Participate in staff training and development
* Contribute to induction and education programs
4) Management
* Ensure smooth operation of pre-assessment services
* Supervise and deploy staff effectively
* Lead on practice development and change management
* Develop and evaluate service plans and budgets
* Ensure compliance with legal and policy requirements
* Participate in external meetings and management structures
* Maintain records and engage with IT developments

Eligibility Criteria
Qualifications and Experience
* Registration with Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (NMBI)
* Minimum 5 years post-registration experience, including 2 in Pre-assessment, Theatre/Endoscopy, or Day Surgery
* Clinical, managerial, and administrative capacity to discharge role functions
* Evidence of ongoing professional development in relevant clinical areas
Other Requirements
* Flexible working hours, including out-of-hours cover if needed
* Extensive experience in pre-assessment services within an acute hospital setting
* Ability to lead clinical practice and service quality, promote evidence-based decisions, and manage a team
* Strong interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills
* Resilience, adaptability, integrity, and commitment to CPD
* Knowledge of relevant policies, legislation, and clinical programs
* Willingness to develop IT skills and work across various areas for continuity of care
