Role Purpose
As a MV Specialist Electrical Engineer you will be responsible for the MV system related engineering activities on specific construction project or multiple projects. The activities associated with the project will vary and will be agreed with the Project Manager on an ongoing basis. You will co-ordinate the technical design with the onsite installation through to the successful commissioning ensuring that the Kirby Group vision, mission & values are fulfilled. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the responsibilities:
Primary Responsibilities
* MV System Project Lead: Provide direction and leadership for the design and engineering MV system activities on a project level. This includes setting goals, developing short to mid-term plans, and aligning the MV system progress with the overall project delivery strategy and program.
* Multi-Project Management: Lead and manage MV system design and engineering activities across various projects and geographical regions, depending on the scope and particular project requirements.
* Compile and issue electrical technical submittals
* Manage submittals through the approvals process, track procurement and delivery of electrical equipment and complete the receipt verification process once the equipment is delivered
* Attend & record regular supply chain meetings to ensure that progress is monitored & maintained within the overall construction programme
* Update and record progress on system trackers which are fully aligned with the construction schedule
* Review the electrical installation with the BIM team to ensure the design is constructible and that there is adequate space for installation and maintenance of all equipment and cabling
* Liaise with the design team & supply chain to ensure correct operation of the plant on site & successful handover
* Complete electrical system walk-downs to ensure systems are compliant with specifications and drawings
* Compile test pack, FTOP’s and O&Ms and present for approval
* Manage specialist vendors during the commissioning process to ensure timely completion of their works
* Undertake client training in line with agreed training plan
* Regional Support: Assist construction teams with resolving complex MV system technical issues that cannot be resolved at the project level.
System Modelling & Analysis
* Develop, review, and validate MV power system models using ETAP, PSCAD, DIgSILENT, CDEGS, or equivalent tools
* Conduct advanced power system studies including:
o Load flow analysis
o Short-circuit analysis (IEC/IEEE standards)
o Protection coordination and selectivity studies
o Motor starting analysis
o Transient stability studies
o Harmonic analysis & power quality assessment
o Arc-flash hazard assessment
o Grounding/resistivity studies (using CDEGS)
* Ensure modelling assumptions, data inputs, and results are consistent with design documents and manufacturer data.
Design Review & Validation
* Review consultant and subcontractor designs for MV systems (switchgear, transformers, cables, earthing, relays, and protection systems) to identify design gaps and deviations or contradictions in the specifications
* Validate sizing, ratings, and specifications of MV equipment against system study outputs
* Validate cable sizing and make recommendations as appropriate
* Ensure designs comply with project specifications, IEC/IEEE standards, and client requirements
* Verify integration of MV systems with LV, HV, and control systems
Leadership and Strategy
* Support the Project Manager, Electrical Engineering Manager and Design Manager to ensure the overall successful delivery of design and engineering MV system related activities on the project.
* Attend monthly meetings with the Design Manager to ensure ongoing improvements and developments and to review KPI progress.
* Talent Development: Oversee the onboarding and development of design and engineering team talent across the company. This includes supporting and directing career paths, assisting in reviewing and developing comprehensive training programs.
Process Improvement and Integration
* Engineering and Design Process Optimisation: Continuously improve and integrate MV system related engineering and design processes with the company’s established “Kirby Way” for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
* Knowledge Sharing: Facilitate the sharing of best practices and lessons learned through workshops and training programs across regions.
Performance Management and Reporting
* Performance Monitoring: Monitor and track the progress and development of graduate electrical engineers.
* Reporting and Auditing: Monitor and audit MV system compliance with established design, project engineering, and commissioning procedures through Project Support Reviews.
* Project, Design and Engineering Reports: Support and assist in the development, maintenance, and accuracy of Project Engineering Reports for MV systems across multiple projects.
Collaboration and Communication
* Responsibilities Management: Work collaboratively with Project Leads, Project Managers, Design and Engineering Managers to clearly define the roles and responsibilities as a MV system owner. Depending on the scope and complexity of the system it could vary from full ownership to support in specific areas.
* Training and Development Collaboration: Collaborate with HR and others to develop training and workshop materials (internal and external) on the MV system for engineer development programs. Develop or organise at least one training session per year.
* Estimating Support: Assist the estimating team with technical queries and the evaluation of alternative technologies and value engineering proposals.
* Interface with Procurement: Work with the procurement team to evaluate the suitability of products for alternative proposals.
Additional Responsibilities
* Engineering Alerts: Ensure the production of regular Engineering Alerts related to the MV system based on project findings for circulation across the entire group. Aim to produce at least one technical alert per year.
