OverviewSenior Automation Engineer - Sterling EngineeringLocation: Limerick, IrelandDepartment: Engineering / Automation SolutionsReports To: Engineering Manager / Technical DirectorEmployment Type: Full-Time, PermanentThe Senior Automation Engineer will lead the design, development, and implementation of automation and control systems for clients across pharmaceutical, medical device, and advanced manufacturing industries. The role involves delivering robust, compliant, and innovative automation solutions, while mentoring junior engineers and supporting project delivery from concept through to commissioning.
Responsibilities
Lead the design, programming, and integration of PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems.
Manage automation projects from concept through design, FAT/SAT, and handover.
Develop control system architecture, specifications, and documentation.
Configure and program industrial automation platforms (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff).
Lead system testing, validation, and commissioning on client sites.
Troubleshoot and optimize existing automation systems to improve performance.
Ensure compliance with GAMP 5, GMP, and relevant industry standards.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams and provide technical mentorship.
Manage project timelines, budgets, and customer expectations.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Automation, Mechatronic, or Control Engineering (or related field).
5+ years’ experience in automation design and integration, ideally in pharma/med-tech or manufacturing.
Proven experience with PLC and SCADA platforms (Siemens S7/TIA, Rockwell, Wonderware, Ignition, etc.).
Strong knowledge of GAMP 5, validation, and 21 CFR Part 11 compliance.
Skilled in control system design, networking, and instrumentation integration.
Experience in robotics, vision systems, or data acquisition desirable.
Strong communication, leadership, and project management skills.
