We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Lead to join a high-end data centre consultancy delivering complex hyperscale and mission-critical projects across Ireland and Europe. This is a senior leadership role combining hybrid office-based design leadership with regular site and client engagement.
The successful candidate will take ownership of design strategy, lead multidisciplinary teams, and act as a technical authority across multiple large-scale data centre programmes.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the mechanical design delivery for hyperscale and enterprise data centre projects from concept through to IFC and construction support.
• Act as the primary technical authority for mechanical systems including cooling, HVAC, chilled water, heat rejection, and resilience strategies.
• Review and approve designs, calculations, specifications, and technical submissions.
• Manage and mentor senior and intermediate mechanical engineers within the design team.
• Coordinate closely with electrical, CSA, BIM, and commissioning teams to ensure fully integrated designs.
• Interface directly with clients, contractors, vendors, and stakeholders at senior level.
• Provide technical input into project programmes, risk registers, and value engineering exercises.
• Attend site regularly to support construction, resolve technical queries, and manage design change.
• Ensure all designs comply with local regulations, international standards, and data centre best practices (Uptime / TIA / ASHRAE).
• Support bid and proposal activities, including technical narratives and design strategies.
Skills & Qualifications
• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
• 10+ years' experience in mechanical design delivery, with significant data centre experience.
• Proven experience leading design teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
• Strong technical knowledge of data centre cooling architectures and redundancy models (N, N+1, 2N).
• Excellent stakeholder management and client-facing skills.
• Strong commercial awareness and ability to influence design outcomes.
• Experience working in consultancy or engineering-led environments.
