Role Summary:
This role combines traditional DBA responsibilities with modern cloud-based data engineering practices. You'll manage legacy on-premise SQL Server databases while driving innovation through Azure services, Power Platform integration, and data transformation pipelines using Azure Data Factory (ADF). This is a hybrid role suited for someone who can support operational database integrity while enabling modern, scalable data flows across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Database Administration:
o Manage over 50 on-premise and cloud-based SQL Server databases in production and non-production environments.
o Ensure availability, performance, and security of databases and execute backup/recovery strategies.
2. Lead data migration initiatives from legacy systems into Azure SQL, Dataverse, and other cloud-native platforms.
3. Implement data pipelines using Azure Data Factory (ADF), Logic Apps, or custom integrations.
4. Design and implement data transformation logic, complex queries, and REST/API-based data movement.
5. Support Power Platform data ingestion workflows and contribute to Power BI datasets where applicable.
6. Security & Compliance:
o Implement encryption, secure PII/cardholder data, and ensure GDPR/PCI DSS compliance.
o Maintain documentation and audit trails for data lineage, data protection, and retention.
7. DevOps & CI/CD:
o Collaborate with Engineering to build database release pipelines and promote Infrastructure-as-Code practices via Azure DevOps (Git, Pipelines).
o Participate in HA/DR testing and architecture validation.
Technical Skills Required:
* 5+ years' experience with Microsoft SQL Server
* Experience with:
o Azure SQL Database, Azure Blob/Queue storage, Key Vault
o Azure Data Factory (ADF), Synapse (nice to have), Logic Apps, APIs
o Dataverse & Power Platform integrations
o ETL design, testing, and performance tuning
o Backup/restore operations, performance profiling, and indexing strategies
o Data architecture best practices (normalization, partitioning, sharding, etc.)
Experience with the following is an advantage:
* Experience with API-based data movement (REST/OData/JSON)
* Implementing backup and data purging solutions in line with data retention policies
* Encrypting and protecting PII data and card data to comply with GDPR & PCI DSS
* Experience designing and supporting multi-tenant database architectures
* Ability to field audit, security and data retention questions and furnish responses
* Setting up and testing failover for HA and DR architectures
* Azure Dev Ops - Source Control (TFS/Git), Build and Release Pipelines
* PAAS and IAAS offerings - App Services, Azure SQL DB, VM Scale Sets
* Any experience with document based or non-sql databases
