Naval Service: Direct Entry - Engine Room Artificer
The Naval Service is the State's principal seagoing agency with a general responsibility to meet contingent and actual maritime defence requirements. We are now recruiting qualified Maintenance Engineers and Technicians to join as Direct Entry Engine Room Artificers (ERAs). In this role, you'll maintain and repair critical onboard systems including propulsion, power generation and auxiliary machinery. Duties include preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and participation in emergency response operations at sea.
About the Role
Responsible for maintaining, repairing and ensuring the efficient operation of ship propulsion systems, power generation and auxiliary machinery.
Requires technical expertise in mechanical and electrical systems, problem‑solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in a maritime environment.
Plays a vital role in ensuring operational readiness and safety at sea, contributing to the Irish Naval Service’s mission of maritime security and defence.
Conduct planned maintenance and defect rectification on propulsion, electrical and fluid systems.
Diagnose faults and carry out troubleshooting procedures to ensure continuous operation.
Assist in emergency response situations, including firefighting and damage control duties.
Works closely with engineering teams to ensure operational efficiency and safety compliance while maintaining accurate records of maintenance, repairs and part replacements.
Eligibility Requirements
Educational/Professional Qualifications:
HETAC Level 7 in Marine or Mechanical Engineering
QQI Advanced Certificate Craft in Mechanical Automation & Maintenance Fitting, Diesel Fitting, Motor Mechanics
Department of Marine & Natural Resources Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) Certificate of Competency
Applicants must be 18–39 years of age and provide proof of age if progressing.
Minimum height 5ft 2in (157.48 cm).
No visible tattoos above the collar during service.
Must meet work permit eligibility criteria (minimum 5 years to stay in Ireland) and provide proof of working permit.
Must meet medical, physical and security clearance standards.
Base Location
Naval Base, Haulbowline Island, Cork.
