Clinical Nurse Specialist Arthroplasty - UPMC Whitfield Location: UPMC Whitfield Hospital Job type: Permanent Overview of role: The CNS Arthroplasty is an advanced practice role responsible for providing expert clinical care, education, and leadership in the management of patients undergoing joint replacement surgeon. The Arthroplasty CNS will co-ordinate patient care during the pre-operative and post-operative patient review clinics, monitor and review data entry. The CNS will collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to enhance patient outcomes, streamline the arthroplasty pathway, and ensure evidence-based practices in joint replacement care. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Enter PROM's (patient reported outcome measures) at pre-operative clinic and post-operative nurse led clinics at agreed intervals as per consultant (normally six months, 2 years, 5 years) Provide in support to patients during their arthroplasty journey. Ordering and review of x-rays (once competent) Schedule inter-disciplinary referrals as required. Redevelopment of joint education school to prepare patients for early discharge and reduced length of stay. Run reports as requested by Quality / Director of Nursing / Clinical Lead. Increase patient satisfaction with the service. Improve patient outcomes through education and health promotion. Key Responsibilities Managerial The CNS in Arthroplasty will: Provide an efficient, effective and high-quality service, respecting the needs of each patient, family and/or carer. Effectively manage time and caseload to meet changing and developing service needs. Continually monitor the service to ensure it reflects current needs of UPMC Whitfield Hospital. Implement and manage identified changes. Ensure that confidentiality in relation to patient records is maintained. Represent the specialist service at local, national and international level as required. Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records and data on all matters pertaining to the planning, management, delivery and evaluation of care and ensure that this service is in line with UPMC Whitfield Hospital's requirements. Contribute to the service planning process as appropriate and as directed by the DON Have a working knowledge of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Standards as they apply to the role for example, Standards for Healthcare, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections, Hygiene Standards etc and comply with associated protocols. To support, promote and actively participate in sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives to create a more sustainable, low carbon and efficient health service. Professional Accountability and Development The CNS in Arthroplasty will: Provide specialist information and education to patients and their families about improving their understanding, coping and effective management post joint replacement. Provide both formal and informal teaching to a number of people; patients/clients, families, health care providers, including student and trained nurses, and care assistants. Take part in in-house multidisciplinary presentations and teaching to staff in the various acute hospitals. Be self-directed in his/her learning to ensure continued professional credibility. Identify own Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs and engage accordingly. Demonstrate this commitment at yearly Engagement and Competency meetings. Identify areas where scope of practice can be advanced. Provide mentorship, preceptorship, teaching, facilitation and professional supervisory skills for nurses and other health care workers. Function as preceptor to undergraduate and post-graduate student nurses on placement, as necessary. Plan and deliver staff teaching in relation to arthroplasty care. Quality & Audit The CNS Arthroplasty will: Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives related to arthroplasty care. Identify, critically analyse, disseminate, and integrate nursing and other evidence into the area of arthroplasty. Establish, implement, and evaluate audit programs of the service, the quality of care and the Clinical Nurse Specialist current practice, in line with local and regional developments, to include monitoring and health promotion programs as relevant. Use the outcomes of audit to improve service provision. Contribute to service planning and budgetary processes through use of audit data and specialist knowledge. Review policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols in relation to the Arthroplasty service to ensure they are continually updated in line with best practice evidence. Record information on patients electronically, which will provide data for auditing the service. Monitor, access, utilise and disseminate current relevant research to advise and ensure the provision of informed evidence-based practice in the management of joint replacement. Understand the need for nursing research and be able to implement this process to contribute to the development of services provided. Develop and promote research awareness among all staff in relation to joint replacement. Provide leadership in clinical practice and function as a role model to staff nurses who work in UPMC Whitfield Hospital Network with other CNS Arthroplasty and relevantnursing and orthopaedic associations. Generate and contribute to the development of clinical standards and guidelines. Uses specialist knowledge to support and enhance generalist nursing practice. Consult with multi-disciplinary team within UPMC Whitfield Hospital and forge links with community-based GPs to create a seamless service. Contribute to nursing quality assurance by assisting in identification of recurring nursing problems and data collection.
