Purpose Statement
The Instructional Specialist provides support for faculty members through coaching and creating professional development opportunities for teachers to deepen their ability to implement instructional programs and practices to ensure equity and access for all students. The Instructional Specialist provides essential leadership by helping create and supervise long‑term professional growth processes to support the implementation and development of standards‑based curriculum and instruction, as well as a focus on instructional strategies to increase student engagement and learning. The Instructional Specialist is an integral part of the district's faculty support team encompassing all departments within Teaching & Learning.
Essential Functions

Create an environment conducive to effective and engaging instruction.
Model instructional strategies in all classrooms.
Support teachers through a system‑wide induction program including mentoring teachers new to GPS.
Participate in PLCs across the district, collaborating with administrators on developing supports for PLC work.
Build relationships with new teachers in the district to establish an environment of trust and collaboration.
Improve recruitment, development, and retention of outstanding certified staff members by providing engaging, meaningful, and effective professional development.
Evaluate needs within various subject areas and collaborate with teachers, instructional coaches, coordinators, and administrators to interpret and use data to improve instruction.
Collaborate with district and campus leadership teams to determine the strengths and improvement needs in instruction to improve student learning and achievement.
Assist teachers with planning, sequencing, and scaffolding instruction.
Provide professional growth and development training and follow‑up coaching to assist classroom teachers in the use of instructional strategies.
Work with teachers individually, in collaborative teams, and departments to provide relevant instructional support.
Observe and provide feedback to teachers on instruction.
Participate in district‑level meetings, as needed, to assist in the coordination of district‑level professional growth and development offerings.
Establish rapport with faculty and staff.
Prepare and maintain a variety of files/records to demonstrate program benefits and needs assessments for future planning efforts.
Model professionalism at all times to demonstrate the expected behaviors and actions of a master teacher.

Other Functions

Assist other personnel to support them in completing their work activities.

Job Requirements
Mental Requirements

Learning Development – Level E: Knowledge in a recognized professional field or technological discipline sufficient to command various principles, facts, and practical applications. Learning development is obtained by completing a college curriculum resulting in a bachelor's degree in a specialized field or advanced mathematics, very advanced language development, proficient understanding of practical systems.
Problem Solving – Level 2: Work situations require consideration and interpretation of circumstances or information to choose the most effective responses. Solutions may be somewhat technical, yet are relatively straightforward, obvious, and well‑defined once problems are understood. Responses come from prior learning and experiences.

Physical Requirements

Physical Skill – Level A: Basic level of learned physical skill is required. No special coordination beyond normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.
Physical Effort – Level 1: Minimal physical exertion is required. Most job time is spent sitting with occasional walking. Occasional lifting, guiding, and carrying of lightweight materials or equipment.

Social Requirements

Human Relations Skill – Level B: Job requires patience in communication and well‑developed verbal skills to exchange technical or complex information with individuals or small, informal groups. Skills in establishing harmonious relationships and gaining cooperation are important.
Scope of Contacts – Level 1: The important job contacts are with peers in the immediate work group and immediate supervisor. Occasional contact with individuals outside the organization may occur.

Work Environment

Performance Environment – Level A: Changes in environments, work pressure, disturbances of workflow, and irregularities in work schedule are infrequent.
Physical Working Conditions – Level 2: Somewhat disagreeable conditions. Work may be performed in cramped or awkward positions. Occasional exposure to safety hazards, disease, or contamination may result in chance for lost‑time accidents. Occasional exposure to noise, temperature extremes, etc.

Accountability

Level of Accountability – Level B: Responsible for producing journey‑level work output on an independent basis subject to supervisory direction and review.
Organizational Impact – Level 3: Work results, decisions, and approvals impact the overall design of internal systems, programs, and/or research; the status of others; and/or critical aspects of the final product or service in terms of quantity or quality.

Experience, Education, and Certifications

Experience: 5+ years of exemplary teaching experience. Instructional leadership experience (coaching, PLCs, etc.).
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited education institution (Masters preferred).
Certifications/Clearances: Arizona Teaching Certificate. Must possess a valid Arizona DPS Level One IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card while employed.

Compensation Details

FLSA Status: Exempt
Pay Schedule: Teacher
Work Calendar: Teacher – 184 Work Days (Plus 7 additional dates TBD paid as a Supplemental pay)
