Position: Mechanical Design Engineer
Reports to: Engineering Design Manager
Contract Type: Permanent
Travel: Occasional international travel may be required for client meetings
Role Overview
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for translating client requirements into production-ready mechanical designs for the fabrication of high-specification equipment used in regulated manufacturing environments. This role involves creating detailed 3D and 2D mechanical designs, providing technical input across the full project lifecycle, and supporting production and assembly teams with technical queries.
The position requires strong mechanical design expertise, hands-on CAD experience, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, engineering-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the sales team in developing concept and sales drawings.
* Review and interpret client specifications and user requirement documents.
* Produce detailed 3D and 2D designs using CAD tools such as Solid Edge, SolidWorks, or Autodesk Inventor.
* Collaborate with project teams to ensure all design deliverables are completed on time and within budget.
* Serve as the mechanical design subject matter expert throughout project execution, providing guidance on manufacturability and fabrication.
* Lead design review meetings and client approval processes for general arrangements, P&IDs, and other technical documentation.
* Manage the design approval process and participate in ergonomic mock‑up and layout reviews.
* Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BoMs), engage with suppliers, and liaise with procurement to support material sourcing.
* Assist project managers in the development of project schedules and planning activities.
* Control design changes and prepare Variation Change Requests (VCRs) for client review.
* Support the creation and execution of Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
Skills and Experience Required
* Proven proficiency in 3D CAD software, ideally Solid Edge, SolidWorks, or Autodesk Inventor.
* Strong knowledge of sheet metal design and flat pattern generation.
* Experience in concept and detailed design, including the production of manufacturing documentation (GMP‑compliant drawings, assembly documentation, and parts lists).
* Demonstrated ability to design for manufacturability — ensuring cost‑effective and efficient fabrication and assembly.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to liaise directly with clients and manage multiple projects concurrently.
* Familiarity with Good Documentation Practices (GDP) within regulated or life sciences industries.
* Understanding of relevant safety and compliance standards, including ATEX, CE, and UL.
* Excellent time management and problem‑solving skills with a proactive and structured approach to work.
Education and Qualifications
* Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related discipline).
* Minimum of 5 years’ experience in mechanical design of machinery or process equipment.
