Role Overview We are seeking a motivated, self-starting AMLA Correspondentto lead our coverage of the new EU Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA).
The Correspondent will inform stakeholders from obliged entities and regulators to MEPs and public affairs professionals of updates in the EU's regulatory regime.
This role is ideal for a journalist with proven experience in breaking news, regulatory reporting and public policy who is excited to cover a European agency at the forefront of the fight against financial crime.
You'll be responsible for breaking stories, tracking the development of AMLA's mandate and governance and reporting on regulatory standards, including the Single Rulebook, as they evolve.
You'll also cover AMLA's coordination of Europe's Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs), the agency's risk assessments related to third countries and its impact across sectors including banking, fintech, insurance, gaming and crypto/VASPs.
This is a high-impact beat that will put you at the centre of European regulatory reporting.
Key Responsibilities Break newsand deliver exclusives on AMLA's activities, policy positions, leadership and enforcement actions.- Report on rulemaking,including the Single Rulebook, consultations, technical standards, guidance and supervisory developments.- Cover FIU co-ordinationand AMLA's role in strengthening information sharing and operational effectiveness across Member States.- Monitor sectoral impacton banking, fintech, insurance, gaming and VASPs; explain implications to practitioners and the public.- Develop sourceswithin EU institutions, national regulators, AMLA's leadership and staff, FIUs, industry stakeholders, NGOs and think tanks.- Produce multi-format content: fast-turn news, deeper features, explainers, Q&As and data-led analysis.- Attend briefings and events(virtual and in-person), including quarterly travel to Frankfurt for coverage, interviews and relationship building.- Collaboratewith editors, analysts and data teams to enrich stories with context and intelligence.- Uphold editorial standards: accuracy, fairness, timeliness and legal/ethical compliance.
Requirements Experience: Minimum 2 yearsprofessional journalism experience (newsroom, wire service, trade press or investigative outlet).- Beat knowledge: Demonstrable interest or experience in EU institutions, financial regulation, AML/AFC or public policy reporting.- Language: Working knowledge of German(reading/listening essential; speaking/writing a plus).
Strong English required.- Writing & reporting: Proven ability to break stories, write clean copy on deadline and distill complex regulation for a professional audience.- Source-building: Track record of cultivating informed sources and conducting on- and off-the-record interviews.- Analytical skills: Comfort working with legal and technical documents (e.g., regulations, standards, delegated acts).- Location & travel: Based in Frankfurtor able to travel there quarterly.
EU work authorization required.- Digital fluency: Proficiency with newsroom tools, document tracking, and source management; familiarity with data journalism tools is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications Prior coverage of EU agencies (e.g., EBA, ESMA, ECB, OLAF) or national AML supervisors.
Experience reporting on AML directives, sanctions, FIU operations, or crypto/VASP regulation.
Familiarity with public records, transparency requests, and procedural timelines in EU policymaking.
German or other EU language proficiency beyond working level.
Comfort presenting at webinars/panels or moderating interviews.
