Post 1844 - Medical Scientist (Cork) Cork Job Description 1. Job Title: Medical Scientist 2. Grade / Salary Scale: Medical Scientist 3. Department : Diagnostics Laboratory 4. Reports to : Chief Medical Scientist, Diagnostics Laboratory or their nominee 5. Location: Cork 6. Annual Leave: 28 days per annum pro rata 7. Hours of Work: 35 hours per week pro rata 8. Purpose of Role The Diagnostics Laboratory in MRTC provides the following services and the purpose of this role is support this work. Provision of crossmatched blood for patients with complex antibodies. Investigation of red cell antibodies including serologically complex cases. Investigation of haemolytic transfusion reactions. ABO/Rh typing, including the investigation of blood group anomalies. Investigation of patients with positive direct antiglobulin tests. Investigation of autoimmune haemolytic anaemia. Investigation of haemolytic disease of the foetus & newborn (HDFN). Antenatal screening for red cell antibodies to identify at risk pregnancies. (antibody titration as appropriate). Provision of suitable blood at delivery for at risk pregnancies. Phenotyping of donor red cells. Clinical and scientific advice to hospital colleagues. Extended phenotyping for transfusion dependant patients and for patients with complex red cell antibodies. Importation of rare blood for named patients Out of hours emergency on-site service Investigation of monoclonal antibody interference Management of Platelet Stock for the Munster region Secondary processing of components, including splitting of paediatric red cells and platelets and irradiation of red cells. Completion of EOS online orders for Platelets and specialised red cell orders. 9. Key Duties and Areas of Responsibilities Key Deliverables Perform all work to the highest professional standards according to Diagnostics Laboratory policies and procedures, as determined by the laboratory Chief Medical Scientist or designee. Participate in the implementation of operational processes to the standards of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) in order to optimise use of resources. Test and process patient/donor samples Participate in the provision of on call service for compatibility testing and urgent reference serological testing, once appropriate training received Operation of automated testing systems, maintenance of equipment, validation of testing kits, preparation of samples for testing, recording and reporting results Actively participate in and promote continuing education, research activities and training opportunities. Attend laboratory training as required. Participate in writing and updating of laboratory documentation as requested by senior staff. Participate in training of staff and maintenance of training records as requested by senior staff. Perform routine work to the highest professional standards as determined by the laboratory management team. To be responsible for the quality of their work and carry out their duties in accordance with laboratory policy and IBTS HR Manual. Conform to IBTS Health and Safety standards. Perform other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time by laboratory management. 10. Person Specification / Selection Criteria Essential Criteria Candidates must have, or be eligible for, full Membership of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM) or registered with CORU. Must be available to start immediately or after required notice period. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating an ability to work in a team environment. Must demonstrate flexibility to work in a demand driven environment, enthusiasm, adaptability and a willingness to co-operate Good computer skills Appointee must demonstrate experience of working in a GMP/GLP environment. Experience in the area of red cell serology including antibody identification and blood grouping Experience of reference red cell immunohaematology (investigation of complex red cell serology). Experience of working out of hours in a blood transfusion laboratory Knowledge of ISO accreditation. Additional Information or Comments : Medical Scientists must be registered, or eligible for registration, with CORU. 12.
