Occupational Therapy Assistant
To work under the supervision of a qualified Occupational Therapist (OT) to support the delivery of occupational therapy interventions for individuals experiencing mental health difficulties. The postholder will assist service users in developing, maintaining, or restoring independence and quality of life through engagement in meaningful activities, rehabilitation programmes, and community integration.
Responsibilities of Occupational Therapy Assistant
* Assist the Occupational Therapist in planning, delivering, and evaluating group and individual interventions for adults with mental health needs.
* Support service users to develop daily living, self-care, vocational, leisure, and social skills.
* Facilitate therapeutic group sessions (e.g., art, cooking, social skills, relaxation, community outings).
* Encourage and motivate service users to participate in recovery-oriented activities that promote independence and well-being.
* Support service users in goal-setting and monitoring progress in line with care plans.
* Prepare, maintain, and organise therapy materials, equipment, and activity spaces.
* Observe, record, and report service user progress, behaviours, and concerns to the supervising OT.
* Contribute to multidisciplinary team discussions by providing feedback from interventions.
* Promote a safe, inclusive, and therapeutic environment in line with mental health service policies.
* Maintain accurate and confidential service user records in line with GDPR and organisational requirements.
* Undertake administrative duties as required, including documentation and updating care plans.
* Participate in supervision, in-service training, and continuing professional development (CPD).
Requirements of Occupational Therapy Assistant
* QQI Level 5 qualification (or equivalent) in a health/social care discipline.
* Experience working in a mental health, healthcare, or social care setting.
* Knowledge of recovery-oriented practice and the role of occupational therapy in mental health.
* Good communication, interpersonal, and teamworking skills.
* Ability to motivate and engage service users in meaningful activities.
* Basic IT and record-keeping skills.
* Flexibility and reliability in meeting service needs.
Desirable Requirements
* Previous experience working directly in occupational therapy services.
* Experience facilitating group programmes.
* Full clean driving licence and access to transport.
