Overview of the department

The core mission of the School of Mathematical Sciences is to engage in research in the Mathematical Sciences (including publishing research in high quality international peer-reviewed journals and supervising graduate research students), to provide mathematical education of the highest standard that is appropriate to the needs of DCU’s diverse student body, and to promote an awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its applications to other areas.

The School offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Actuarial Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Mathematics Teacher Education, and Astrophysics and Relativity, in addition to service Mathematics courses across all five Faculties of the University.

The School has a broad research profile in the Mathematical Sciences, with research carried out in five main areas: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability, Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Relativity and Astrophysics (see https://www.dcu.ie/maths/research-mathematical-sciences-1).

They must also have experience of teaching Mathematics effectively at university level. Commitment to securing external research funding is essential. The successful candidate will contribute to all aspects of the work of the School - research, teaching and service.

* Carry out to a high standard all relevant administrative duties associated with teaching and assessment, and engage effectively with stakeholders within the University, including in relation to the School’s service teaching brief;
* Work proactively to enhance and enrich existing modules and programmes, and contribute to the design and development of new modules and programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and in relation to professional development courses;
* Provide project supervision for undergraduate students and taught postgraduate students.
