The Role

Amnesty International is seeking to appoint a
Volunteer Board Member with significant financial expertise
to join its Board of Directors. The successful candidate will provide strategic oversight of the raising and deployment of charitable funds and will be a strong, collaborative leader with the technical expertise and financial acumen required to guide the Board and its committees through complex financial and governance matters.

Role Requirements and Key Responsibilities include:

* Advise and guide the Board on all financial matters, ensuring sound financial stewardship.
* Evaluate and monitor the adequacy of finance policies, procedures and controls, ensuring compliance with best practice principles.
* Provide oversight of financial management, including budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting.
* Support robust audit and risk governance, including internal controls and risk management frameworks.
* Serve as a member of the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee contributing specialist financial expertise.

Skills and Experience Required

Financial Expertise

* A qualified accountant who has operated at a senior level for at least five years.

Governance and Compliance

* Strong familiarity with SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) standards. Knowledge of Charities Regulator requirements and best practice in charity financial governance.
* Understanding of audit, risk, and compliance frameworks, including internal controls.

Financial Oversight and Strategic Planning

* Proven ability to interpret and challenge financial reports, budgets, and forecasts.
* Experience aligning financial decision-making with long-term organisational strategy and sustainability.

All Board Members are expected to:

* Comply with the organisation's governing document.
* Ensure the organisation is carrying out its charitable purpose for the public benefit.
* Act in the best interests of the organisation at all times.
* Act with reasonable care, skill, and diligence.
* Manage and protect the assets of the organisation.

Board Meetings

* There are ten scheduled board meetings per year: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, September, October and November.
* Meetings take place on the last Thursday of each month, from 17:00 to 19:00.
* A minimum of four meetings per year are held in person at Amnesty International Ireland's offices in Temple Bar, Dublin.

Board Committees

* Board members are expected to participate as a member of at least one board committee, of which there are four – Audit & Risk, Governance, Human Resources, and International.
* The successful candidate will be expected to join the Audit & Risk Committee.
* Trustees are elected for a two-year term, with the possibility to be re-elected twice.

This is not a remunerated board role.
