Ref No: 2025/80 Mortuary Manager – Permanent, Full-Time

The purpose of this post is leading the mortuary team & ensuring the delivery of an effective Mortuary Service in cooperation with the Consultant Chemical Pathologist, Laboratory Manger, Chief Medical Scientist, Senior Medical Scientist and Staff Grade Medical Scientists.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

Has responsibility for leading the mortuary team & ensuring the delivery of an effective Mortuary Service including (but not limited to) the following;


* Admission & release of bodies, organisation of viewing of bodies, care of valuables and associated medico-legal documentation.
* Assists (or ensures that suitably qualified assistance is provided) during post-mortem examinations, including reconstruction after post-mortem examination.
* Compliance with relevant legislation, for example Human Tissue (Transplantation, Post-Mortem, Anatomical Examination and Public Display) Act 2024 and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reprotoxic Substances) Regulations 2024. Note: relevant legislation will change throughout the post holders career and the post holder must ensure compliance with any relevant changes.
* Ensuring the provision of the daily administration, cleaning, disinfection and care of the area, including that it is hygienic & safe and that bodies are prepared for post-mortem examinations according to local procedures and professional best practise
* The implementation of a quality management system for the mortuary service, designed in collaboration with the Lead Clinical Perinatal Pathologist and Chief Medical Scientist of Histology, based on relevant standards e.g. ISO15189 (e.g. preparation of Standard Operating Procedures, equipment verification & maintenance, training & competency, )
* The contribution to the development of, and carrying out of, contingency & major incident response plans as required by Rotunda and HSE policies
* Ensures that specimens taken for analysis and laboratory examinations in the Mortuary Suite or by Mortuary Staff are unambiguously traceable to the source patient, clearly labelled and delivered to the relevant laboratory in a safe & timely manner. Ensures adequate records are kept of same.
* The post holder is expected to lead & supervise all activities of the Mortuary team.
* The post holder is expected to provide training to others as requested by perinatal pathologists or chief medical scientist of histology
* The post holder is expected to ensure the competency of staff members assigned to the Mortuary Suite, including Continuous Professional Development.
* Ensure that all members of the Mortuary team and comply with Mandatory Training

Professional Qualifications

* As stipulated by the Health Service Executive and Department of Health, currently:
* Diploma in Mortuary Hygiene and Technology awarded by the Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene London

or

* Such equivalent Qualification, as may be approved by the Minister of Health from time to time.

and

* Experience in managing staff and a post mortem/Mortuary department is highly desirable
* Note: should professional registration be introduced during the post holders career, the post holder will be expected to gain registration as early as practicable and to support all other members of the Mortuary team to attain registration

* Demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of best practice in delivering a Quality Laboratory Service
* Demonstrate awareness and appreciation of the service user and the patient
* Demonstrate flexibility and openness to change.
* Demonstrate understanding of the role of quality assurance, quality management and process improvement principles in laboratory operation and planning.
