This document is intended for guidance only to assist selection panels to make determinations about the relevance of qualifications and experience required under the Essential criteria for the range of Classroom Assistant posts.
Hold a minimum of a Level 2 (or equivalent) qualification in a relevant area from a recognised accredited awarding body AND have a minimum of 6 weeks experience which has been gained either through working in a formal learning environment or through a placement completed as part of your level 2 (or equivalent) qualification OR
Have a minimum of 12 months’ experience of working in a formal learning environment.
* Recognised Level 2 qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland include:
o level 2 certificate
o level 2 diploma
o level 2 national certificate
o level 2 national diploma
o level 2NVQ
* For GCSE Maths and English (under desirable criteria) the following will be deemed equivalent to level 2:
o CSE - grade 1
o GCSE - grades 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 or grades A*, A, B, C
o level 2 essential skills
o level 2 functional skills
o O level - grade A, B or C
* A level (2 subjects)
* access to higher education diploma
* ASlevel (2 subjects)
* International Baccalaureate Diploma
* level 3 certificate
* level 3 diploma
* level 3 national certificate
* level 3NVQ
Qualifications from other awarding bodies outside of England, Wales and Northern Ireland may be deemed equivalent to level 2 or 3 and need to be reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis.
The Register of Regulated Qualifications is a list of accredited awarding institutions. It also includes a list of recognised organisations that meet the standards set by the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).
This is a qualification which would provide the applicant with the skills and knowledge to carry out the duties of the post and fulfil the associated criteria. For example, an applicant for a Classroom Assistant (Special Educational Needs) post would be expected to hold a qualification which relates to area such as children’s care, education, learning, development and/or equips the applicant to work with special educational or medical needs.
As a general rule, a relevant qualification may contain modules relating to but not limited to the following modules
* Safeguarding
* Equality
* Health and Safety
* Personal Care and Nutrition
* Support Children's Play, Learning and Development
* Support of Children with Disabilities and/or Special Needs (applicable to ADD SEN)
Communication and Partnership Working
A formal learning environment may include settings in all types of schools; specialist provisions, daycare/ creche settings, other educational institutions or related services which involve directly working with children and young people.
