MBRYONICS is at the forefront of free space optical communications. Our product
portfolio covers a wide range of emerging technologies from photonic integrated circuits to advanced optical systems and embedded software solutions. Our optical communications systems are integrated and deployed in satellite communications systems. The work is exciting and challenging and is at the forefront of the technology domains. As part of our expansion, we are currently looking for a suitably motivated - Assembly Process Technician - to join our group.
The Assembly Process Technician is a critical, hands-on role responsible for the precise assembly, integration, high-accuracy alignment, and testing of complex opto-mechanical and photonic systems that comprise MBRYONICS' flagship products, such as the StarCom optical terminal. This role directly contributes to the development of the "Internet in Space" infrastructure. Success demands exceptional manual dexterity, micron-level precision, and strict adherence to quality protocols required for flight-critical hardware and controlled manufacturing (MAIT) environments.
What you'll do
Space Systems Integration & Assembly (MAIT)
* Perform intricate mechanical, electrical, and opto-mechanical integration of sub-assemblies (e.g., optical benches, pointing systems) and final StarCom products.
* Work to exacting Advanced Assembly Procedures (AAPs), engineering drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs) for components destined for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.
* Crucially, execute precision optical alignment, bonding, and testing of sensitive components (e.g., lasers, free-form optics, optical amplifiers) using specialised metrology and alignment tools.
* Maintain accurate hardware status and configuration control throughout the entire Manufacturing, Assembly, Integration, and Test (MAIT) process.
Quality Assurance & Contamination Control
* Conduct in-process and final verification and functional testing (e.g., continuity checks, optical performance characterisation) and document results meticulously for flight traceability.
* Rigorously practise Foreign Object Debris (FOD) prevention and strict contamination control protocols within the cleanroom environment, essential for space-qualified optics.
* Identify, document (Non-Conformance Reports - NCRs), and assist in the troubleshooting and rework of complex electronic and photonic assemblies.
* Ensure all integration activities comply with relevant Aerospace Industry Standards (e.g., AS9100, ECSS) and company Quality Management System procedures.
Documentation & Compliance
* Complete all associated manufacturing, quality, and traceability documentation legibly and in real-time to establish the comprehensive product history required for space hardware.
* Adhere strictly to cleanroom protocols (e.g., ISO Class 7/8), electrostatic discharge (ESD) guidelines, and gowning procedures.
* Provide constructive feedback to the R&D, Design, and Engineering teams on procedures, tooling, and product design for improved Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and reliability.
Who you a re
Technical Precision & Dexterity
* Proven ability to read and accurately interpret complex CAD diagrams, engineering drawings, wiring schematics, and optical layouts.
* Exceptional 3D visualisation capability for understanding complex opto-mechanical assemblies and ensuring correct component placement.
* Excellent manual dexterity and fine motor control required for precise handling, bonding, and alignment of miniature, delicate components often performed under magnification (microscope).
Experience (High-Reliability Sectors)
* 2+ years of experience in precision assembly and integration is required, ideally within the aerospace/satellite, aeronautical, photonics/optics, or high-reliability electronics sectors.
* Direct experience with cleanroom procedures, high-precision optical alignment, micro-assembly, or fibre optic handling is highly advantageous.
* A relevant QQI Major Award (e.g., a Level 5 or Level 6 Certificate) or equivalent technical qualification in a mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, or engineering discipline (e.g., a Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) course) is considered a strong plus.
Desired Qualities
* Strong attention to detail and a proven understanding of materials and processes used in vacuum and low outgassing space environments.
* Proactive, self-motivated worker with a strong commitment to quality and accountability.
