Health Care Assistant (Rehabilitation Service) Primarily based at Blarney Rehabilitation Unit Permanent Contract, Full time Hours.
The Health Care Assistant (Rehabilitation Service) will reports to to the Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM2) of Rehabilitation Services, Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) Nursing Support Services, and works under the direction of the Rehabilitation Staff Nurse.
Details of Service: Blarney Rehabilitation Unit is a newly developed purpose-built post hospital rehabilitation unit.
It is made up of 50 beds located off site from the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) in Blarney, Co Cork.
It remains under the governance of the MUH.
The Rehabilitation Services program delivers specialist post-acute care, focusing on patient-centred reablement to help patients achieve optimal functionality and independence following illness or injury.
This service emphasizes seamless transitions of care between hospital and home, integrating multidisciplinary expertise to support patient recovery.
Responsibilities include: Assist patients with personal care tasks (bathing, dressing, toileting, oral hygiene) in line with individual care plans.
Support patients with mobility and transfers, using safe manual handling techniques and equipment.
Encourage participation in simple reablement activities under the guidance of nursing and therapy staff.
Prepare patients for nursing or therapy interventions (e.g., positioning for exercises, gathering equipment).
Assist with feeding and hydration, monitoring intake and reporting any issues.
Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming ward environment, ensuring equipment and aids are tidy and functional.
Restock supplies (e.g., toiletries, linen, continence aids) and report shortages.
Build respectful, empathetic relationships with patients and families, providing reassurance and emotional support.
Accurately document care activities and observations in patient records, escalating changes in condition promptly.
Work collaboratively with nurses, therapists, and other team members to deliver cohesive care.
Adhere to infection control policies, manual handling protocols, and health and safety guidelines.
Comply with confidentiality requirements.
Eligibility Criteria: The relevant Health Skills QQI (formerly FETAC) Level 5 Qualification, i.e. QQI Level 5 in Healthcare Support, Nursing Studies, Community Care, Health Service Skills, or Community Health Services.
NOTE: A full QQI/FETAC 5 Major Award requires a minimum of 120 credits/8 Modules; a Component Certificate will not suffice.
OR An equivalent relevant health care qualification or a comparable healthcare qualification as outlined in the Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) NARIC Ireland framework.
AND Candidates must have the personal competence and capacity to properly discharge the duties of the role.
