Job purpose
To manage and coordinate the day‑to‑day care on the unit within agreed resources to ensure a seamless service delivery.
To ensure the provision of nursing care by best practice, including adherence to Ballymote Community Nursing policies, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland Guidance and the code of professional conduct for nurses.
To ensure the provision of the service is resident‑focused and upholds the principles of choice, respect, dignity, privacy, independence and fulfilment.
Ultimate responsibility for the monitoring and review of Care Plans, develop and deliver a wound report for monthly review with ADON.
Carry out bi‑monthly clinical supervision and appraisal and performance reviews in collaboration with the ADON.
Ensure that review and update of assessment and care plan are completed after the incident.
Support the nurses to perform at their full potential.
Ensure excellent communication exists between staff, residents and family.
Split between nursing and administrative duties, allowing for a 360‑degree overview of the facility (2 nursing shifts per week and two administrative days, 39 hours per week).
Main Responsibilities
To manage the service on a day‑to‑day basis to include dealing with residents, families and staff.
To be professionally accountable for providing acceptable standards of care following Ballymote Community Nursing policies and the code of professional conduct for nurses.
To ensure professional standards of care are achieved through clinical supervision of staff.
To ensure that all work is resident‑focused and upholds the principles of choice, respect, dignity, privacy, independence and fulfilment.
To support nursing and care staff to promote and respect the inclusion of the resident in the decision‑making process.
To contribute to the development of standards of care through innovation and initiative.
Ensure care staff carry out duties as assigned to the highest standard by supporting, guiding and instructing when required.
To supervise and develop staff skills through delegation and leadership.
To participate in the development of all operational policies/procedures and guidelines and ensure that these are implemented and understood.
To conduct nursing assessments as indicated, using evidence‑based models and practices.
To identify nursing priorities and develop, implement and evaluate nursing care plans as required in a resident‑centred framework.
To work closely with the Director of Nursing to achieve optimal input for the resident and follow recommendations of the Director of Nursing members.
Ensure medications are ordered, stored and administered by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland guidelines.
To participate in further education and/or in‑service training to keep competencies updated.
To act as a preceptor for undergraduate students.
To act as a Clinical facilitator mentor for newly qualified staff nurses.
To support and ensure the clinical environment is conducive to the learning experiences of students.
To orientate new staff to the organisation.
To carry out other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Nursing.
Essential Skills, Competencies and Knowledge
Clinical knowledge: good clinical nursing practice awareness, critical thinking skills, knowledge of approaches to nursing care, evidence‑based practice and nursing research.
Knowledge of Health Policy, Procedures & Guidelines, and clinical assessment of comorbidities of gerontological nursing.
Professional knowledge of organisation and developments in health services, older persons services, national and international trends, advances in nursing care, nurse training programmes, HIQA standards, notifiable incidents, Care Act and regulations 2009.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem‑solving and negotiation skills; teaching/training skills for clients and students.
Effective management, resource management, auditing, goal setting, autonomous and directed work, flexibility, report writing, IT and healthcare technology skills.
Self‑awareness, caring, kind, approachable, ability to deputise for the ADON, enthusiasm and commitment to career and professional development, role‑model behaviour.
Requirements/Qualifications and Experience
Registered or due to be placed on the Register of Nurses by An Bord Altranais / Nursing and Midwifery Board.
Hold a management qualification or be willing to undertake a management course that theoretically supports the role.
Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development at the appropriate level.
Effective communication at all levels.
Genuine interest in working with the relevant client group.
