Job Title : 2 vacancies for a Healthcare Science Assistant Point of Care Testing (POCT)

Location: Altnagelvin Hospital, Western Health & Social Care Trust (WHSCT)

Pay Rate : £12.75 per hour

Working Hours: Monday - Friday, 37 1/2 hours each week. 9am-5pm

Duration :Temporary Contract until the end of May 2026. Review to extend as required.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Experience

5 GCSEs (or equivalent) to include English Language and one science subject or Equivalent (Grade A-C)
OR
2 year’s relevant laboratory experience working in a hospital laboratory.

Organisational knowledge of Health & Safety Awareness of medical laboratories.

Purpose of Role:
The post holder will work with the Clinical Lead Pathologist and General Manager Pathology to ensure the provision of a high quality, cost effective and efficient laboratory service which will meet the standards of MHRA and UKAS accreditation.
The post holder will work as an integral member of the Laboratory team and be responsible for a wide range of tasks to support/assist all laboratory disciplines provide a high quality laboratory service. In particular they will work within specimen reception to help deliver an efficient and effective laboratory reception service.

Principal Duties:
1. Carefully prepare samples for analysis. This may involve centrifuging and separating samples, pipetting serum, measuring and recording volumes and determining sample PH to ensure sample suitability for analysis.
2. The postholder will undertake manual laboratory tests i.e. Faecal Occult blood testing, extraction of RNA using lysing techniques. Ability to be able to interpret diagnostic test results and report accurately.
3. To support all Pathology departments by providing samples, prepared and ready for analysis supplied according to clinical need.Ability to identify and prioritise urgent samples meeting KPI’s set by Pathology management.
4. The post holder will undertake suitable training and development to maintain the competencies required for their post as outlined in the appropriate Training and Competency standards for laboratory support staff.
7.Assist in the decontamination and disposal of pathology specimen waste, including operation of autoclaves. Perform daily quality control checks on equipment, reading reports to ensure sterilisation cycles have passed HTM parameters.
9. The post holder will be proficient in the use of the patient data entry systems and the patient results systems, ensuring accuracy at all times and complying with local and national policies. Adhere to GDPR regulations
10. Operate, monitor and maintain equipment associated with sample preparation and storage including centrifuges, safety cabinets, laboratory pipettes, fridges and freezers etc. Update daily maintenance records highlighting any performance issues.
11. Measure, weigh and prepare chemical/biological solutions for laboratory use adhering to COSHH and H&S requirements.
12. Carry out scanning, archiving and recalling request forms, dealing with patient, client and service users at specimen reception and on the telephone.
13. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
14. The post holder will provide verbal reports of authorised results communicating with clinicians and other approved non clinical users.
15. Defrost all refrigerators and deep freeze cabinets as required.
16. Perform cleaning and decontamination procedures when required in accordance with laboratory policies.
