The Irish Film Institute (IFI), the national body charged with promoting film culture, includes the Irish Film Archive responsible for collecting, preserving, and providing access to Ireland’s moving image heritage. The collections include film, digital materials, and documents. The IFI seeks to appoint a Digital Collections Assistant within the digital team of the Irish Film Archive.
Candidate requirements
The successful candidate should have proven experience in digital collections management, with qualifications in areas such as Archiving, Librarianship, or digital information management, or equivalent experience in digital information management within cultural archives or libraries. They should possess practical knowledge of audio-visual file formats and experience with quality control of such materials. The candidate should be enthusiastic, flexible, and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of working independently or as part of a dynamic team. IT skills, metadata creation, cataloguing experience, and familiarity with managing analogue and digital assets and databases are essential. An interest and knowledge of film and Irish film culture are also desirable.
Purpose of the job
The Digital Collections Assistant will collaborate with the digital collections team in managing the acquisition, processing, and collection management of materials from partner organizations such as IFB, BAI, and the Arts Council. They will work closely with the Digital Collections Manager & Special Collections Manager to implement the DPAS, especially in digital AV accessioning and quality control, ensuring adherence to international standards and aligning policies with existing collection management practices.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
The DCA will ensure that audio-visual materials from partners are accessioned, quality assured, and preserved according to IFI policies within agreed timeframes. They will report on the quantity and quality of deliveries, contribute to developing cataloguing and compliance systems, and research digital collection standards. They will also oversee technical management of archive ingest stations, liaising with users and resolving technical issues, including contact with external parties such as Digital Garage.
