Fully-Funded Ph.D. Position on Edge-Cloud ComputingWe are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for a prospective Ph.D. student to join the School of Computer Science at University College Dublin (UCD). The position is fully funded and focuses on cutting‑edge research in distributed systems, edge computing, and sustainable computing.Research Topic“Sustainable Computing at the Edge-Cloud Continuum” explores how to seamlessly integrate and optimize resource utilization and workloads across edge servers, multi‑cloud infrastructures, and IoT devices. The interdisciplinary study combines computer networks, distributed systems, and machine learning to achieve enhanced energy efficiency, reduced carbon footprint, and improved sustainability.SupervisorDr. Hadi Tabatabaee Malazi (Hadi.TabatabaeeMalazi@ucd.ie)Post Duration4 yearsExpected Start DateJanuary 2024Application Deadline30th September 2023Mandatory QualificationsMinimum 2.1 grade (i.e., >60 %) in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related technical discipline.Strong programming skills in at least one of the following languages: Python, Java, or C.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Experience or knowledge of machine learning techniques, cloud computing, and computer networks.Willingness and motivation to learn new theoretical and technological areas.Desired QualificationsMaster’s degree in computer science or a closely related field.Peer‑reviewed academic publications.Practical experience in simulation environments and ML libraries (e.g., CloudSim, OMNeT++, NS3, MATLAB, TensorFlow).Experience with service containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, Minikube).Theoretical knowledge of game theory, graph theory, and optimization methods.Principal Duties and ResponsibilitiesConduct a specified program of research under the supervision of Dr. Malazi, working closely with UCD staff and other Ph.D. students.Travel to meetings and conferences as required.Complete modules in relevant topics to a total of 30 credits as part of a structured Ph.D. programme.Assist with teaching duties as assigned.Ensure all research complies with UCD requirements for ethical research and data management, and complete the Ph.D. within the allocated period.BenefitsFull tuition fee waiver and a €19,000 annual tax‑free stipend.Travel budget for conferences.Equipment budget.How to ApplyApplicants should send the following documents to Hadi.TabatabaeeMalazi@ucd.ie before the deadline:One‑page cover letter describing how you meet the mandatory/desired requirements.Detailed curriculum vitae (CV) including education history, programming skills, and research projects/publications.Scanned copies of relevant academic transcripts.English language proficiency evidence for non‑native English speakers, as required by UCD.Equality, Diversity, and InclusionUCD is committed to creating an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated.
