The Office of Public Works (OPW) invites applications for appointment to the position ofCraft Plastererin the areas within the responsibility of Building Maintenance Services, Dublin. This competition is open to all candidates who meet the minimum eligibility criteria. While the successful candidate will be based at Collins Barracks in Dublin, he/she will be required to work at a number of locations throughout the Dublin area.Essential Eligibility RequirementsCandidates must, at the closing date for receipt of applications, possess the following:An Advanced Certificate Level 6 in the Craft of Plastering;*(or equivalent Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications.);*Irish or Foreign qualification (in a similar field of study) recognised as equivalent to the above qualifications on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications.Note: Apprenticeship served in this, evidence of craft and exams completed successfully will be necessary and copies should be submitted with your application.A minimum of 3 years' relevant work experience (post qualification ) ;A full, clean and current driving licence, category B & W* and use of own transport;*(1), (2)Note: * (1) If your Irish driving licence is restricted to driving cars with an automatic transmission only (denoted by the code 78 appearing on the licence), you are not eligible. (2)From 1 January 2021 if you are resident in Ireland and hold a UK/NI driving licence it is no longer valid to drive on here in Ireland. It is not legal for driving purposes and must therefore be exchanged. It is vital that you have a valid driving licence and that you are legally allowed to drive in Ireland by exchanging a UK/NI licence for an Irish driving licence. Further information available on: A current Safepass card**Note:**Where a current safe pass card is not available, proof of successful completion of the Safe Pass Coursepriorto the closing date will be accepted.Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties and responsibilities of the position of Craft Plasterer in the OPW are multifaceted and varied.These include the application of plaster to internal and external wall surfaces and ceilings, to produce a seamless fine finished surface. Plastering also involves the application of protective and decorative coats of cement based material and similar material to external surfaces of buildings. A plasterer's work includes the preparation of surfaces by fastening metal or plasterboard to form a key or background for plastering. Maintenance and repair work includes routine servicing and emergency repairs, which involves finding faults, replacing or repairing damaged parts.The Craft Plasterer must maintain effective communications with colleagues, clients and equipment suppliers. Proper maintenance and updating of job-related and equipment-related documentation is critical.Requirements and Principal Duties of a Craft PlastererNote:The following list, which is not exhaustive, sets out the broad range of duties that may be required to be undertaken by a Craft Plasterer. Variances in the requirements of individual posts will reflect the management and operational requirements of individual sites and areas of work.Scudding;Rendering and floating sand/cement;Floating lightweight/plasters;Cutting and fixing plasterboards;Fixing metal beads using expanded metal;Skimming walls and ceilings;Dotting and screeding;Floating with soft screeds;Fixing rules for reveals/plinths and quoinstones;Plastering piers, beams and curved surfaces;Dry lining, taping joints;Cutting and fixing fibrous plaster;Plaster moulding;Squaring and margining of reveals;Floating and skimming;Erecting scaffolding;Working with a variety of specialised hand and power tools;Knowledge of properties of a range of materials and chemicals;Working quickly and to a high standard for finishing;Performing a range of techniques to include decorative and ornamental work;Interpreting technical drawings and specifications;Producing decorative panels by moulding and casting plaster in workshops;Mentoring, monitoring and supervision of Apprentices;;Working alongside other skilled and non-skilled people reporting directing to your Supervisor;Liaising with Foreperson/Chargehand regarding site related work e.g. ordering materials in advance and keeping site work ongoing;Driving a mobile maintenance unit vehicle as required;Co-operation with the principle of Main Trade "makes good";Maintain ISO records and communications, as required;Keeping work areas clean, tidy and safe;Ordering and collecting materials required for works;Understanding and acceptance of the Employees duty of care as set out in current Health & Safety regulations. Complying with Health & Safety Requirements;Reporting any accidents and misuse of plant, materials and machinery to the Service Manager/Foreman/Chargehand;Ensuring the safekeeping of all plant, tools, equipment and materials in your charge, or in use by others on the sites within your charge;Attending training courses in conservation, construction, supervision and health and safety as required by the Department;Assisting in all other duties as may be directed by the Service Manager/Foreperson/Chargehand;Co-operation with the introduction of new work practices and technology;Carrying out activities in line with Building Maintenance Service safety systems including preparation of Safe Systems of Work Plans (SSWP's), with reference to Safety Policies, ActivityRisk Assessments and Safe Operating Procedures (SOP's);Know and understand Health & Safety, keeping areas of work clean, tidy and safe;Carrying out other duties which are considered appropriate to the grade.A Craft Plasterer is required to:Demonstrate flexibility and mobility, consistent with the needs of the service;Contribute to and maintain a good team spirit and an effective team-working environment;Carry out all work in a safe manner both to colleagues and to the public through understanding, observance and application of Health and Safety requirements;To successfully undertake training as and when required;Be physically capable of meeting the requirements of the position;To carry out other duties/works deemed by management as appropriate to the grade and to the position;Work on own initiative in accordance with supervisor/manager instructions whilst being aneffective part of a larger team;Co-operate with the introduction of new work practices and technology.
