What is the opportunity? This is an exciting opportunity to lead a team of expert lawyers in supporting New Ireland Assurance and related entities which are all members of the Bank of Ireland Group. This role will allow you to provide input to key strategic decisions of New Ireland Assurance and to grow and practice your expertise in insurance and pensions law. You will also be a member of Bank of Ireland's Group Legal Services ("GLS") management team (which, together with the GLS senior leadership team supports the General Counsel in setting and delivering the Group's legal strategy). In this role, you will: Provide expert legal advice and constructive challenge to senior management and business colleagues on corporate, commercial and consumer law matters, policies and procedures, products and general business and change initiatives pertinent to New Ireland Assurance and its related business units; Duties include but not limited to, Developing and promoting legal strategy in a manner consistent with business strategy Planning and managing day-to-day operations of the team Leading and developing a team of 4 legal professionals and 2 legal assistants Anticipating, assessing and reporting on legal risks Monitoring and reporting on legal and regulatory developments Negotiating, drafting and reviewing material legal contracts governing arrangements such as outsourcing, investment management services, custodial services, agency management and risk and financial reinsurance. Collaborating with Compliance to promote a strong compliance culture and participating in the activities of the wider GLS Management Team. Dispute resolution (including management of contentious complaints and claims and a small litigation portfolio) Handling financial outcomes and costs associated with the legal team; What will make you stand out? You will have shown capability to address complex legal and regulatory issues which relate to insurance and investment products. This experience will ideally be from a law firm or from a financial services firm, advising on regulatory issues particularly with an insurance and investment context. You have strong leadership skills and can lead, empower and mentor a team and colleagues in GLS to ensure delivery against GLS objectives. You have awareness of the issues facing the insurance and pensions industry in Ireland including regulatory issues to ensure the team keeps pace with a changing business, legal and regulatory environment. We are looking for someone with strong interpersonal, decision making and relationship building skills and critical thinking, in particular the ability to exercise commercial judgement and constructively challenge business owners to ensure alignment between various partners in a dynamic growth area. In addition, strong management experience, including effecting process simplification and leading change constructively. Technical areas required: The law concerning life assurance, insurance intermediary activities, insurance based investment products and pensions in Ireland. Essential qualifications Irish qualified lawyer with extensive commercial experience in a commercial/in-house environment. More about the team Group Legal Services (GLS) provides a wide range of significant transactional and advisory services to the Bank of Ireland Group and assists business in the identification and management of legal risk. The function has a Group-wide remit and reports to the Group Executive Committee. This is a hybrid role based in Baggot Plaza, Dublin 4.
