Position DescriptionThe Network Designer (Engineering Officer) is responsible for providing safe network designs within your discipline.
These design packs will be used by ESB Networks staff and/or contractors as per Work Programs to carry out work safely on the Electricity Network.
The designs shall be carried out in line with relevant standards set down by ESB Network Assets and adhering to Company Standards.
Depending upon the specific role assignment, this design work can be related to domestic, commercial, and industrial new or increased customer connections.
Additionally, the design work may be associated with the Capital Work Programmes including line design from LV to 38kV and underground design.
All design work must be completed promptly and in accordance with ESB design standards & guidelines, ensuring compliance with ESB Networks Customer Charter standards.
The role includes managing your own design workload.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently but also as part of a larger design team, following schedules set by their design manager.
Key ResponsibilitiesPreparing high-quality designs; calculating costs; preparing capital approvals, work authorizations, protection settings, design drawings; measuring design clearances for 38kV, MV, and LV networks, including use of all associated IT systemsPreparing scopes of work, costing templates, and safety documentationRecording and updating the Distribution Network on relevant IT systemsMaintaining a commercial focus by preparing least-cost, technically acceptable designsLiaising and negotiating with Local Authorities, landowners, and other parties to obtain routes for underground cables and overhead lines, in accordance with legislation and ESB policiesEnsuring compliance with legislation and ESB Policy in obtaining landowner consent, including issuing wayleavesArranging cable easements, forestry easements, and road opening and closure licenses as needed.
Applying for and processing Road Opening LicensesFollowing ESB's Code of Ethics "Our Code"Processing Site Acquisition and Planning Permission applications as requiredManaging own design workload as agreed with the relevant Design ManagerDelivering excellent customer service in line with ESB Networks Customer CharterParticipating in the scheduling of construction workEnsuring compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental LegislationFulfilling the role of Designer under Construction RegulationsGaining and maintaining extensive knowledge of HV / MV / LV Electrical Networks, depending on specific area of work and expertiseSupporting the planning and execution of construction and maintenance work programs as neededUtilizing IT systems such as SAP IWM, EPlan, SAP FMIS, Excel, etc.Experience and QualificationsAdvanced Level 6 Electrical Trade Certificate, 3rd Level qualification, or equivalent work experienceA full clean driving licenseAbility to translate scope and policy requirements into feasible designsAbility to implement standards and policies to ensure optimal designKnowledge of ESB network assets; Substations, Lines, Cables, Protection, and MeteringMinimum of 3 years relevant experienceKnowledge of ESB IT systemsUnderstanding and application of relevant Quality Management standards in ESB NetworksLocationThis position will be based in Athlone or Longford.
