OverviewMachine Learning/AI Research Engineer (Post-doc) role at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. This role has been designed as ‘Hybrid’ with an expectation that you will work on average 2 days per week from an HPE office.ProjectThe COIN Project (Control-Oriented Innovations for Future Ocean Energy Farms) is focused on advancing renewable ocean energy in response to climate goals and growing concerns over energy security and pricing. By developing innovative solutions such as smart connectors for mooring and power, real-time AI-based wave prediction, and digital twin-based health monitoring, the project aims to overcome technical and economic challenges in wave energy. These technologies, supported by a techno-economic optimization framework, are designed to improve the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of ocean energy systems and support the transition to a cleaner energy future. HPE is contributing its expertise in advanced control (reinforcement learning), forecasting, and digital twin technology to help drive the successful commercialization of this cutting-edge renewable energy solution.Start/End Date: October 2025 to September 2028 (3 Years)Location: Galway / DublinMandatory RequirementsPhD degree (or Master's with equivalent research and innovation experience)What We Are Looking ForHewlett Packard Labs is currently seeking a highly qualified, self-motivated machine learning/AI researcher to be part of a new and growing AI research team in Ireland, to accelerate research towards various applications of digital twins incorporating Machine Learning. Hewlett Packard Labs is an international research organization with its headquarters and largest facility located in Silicon Valley, California. As the central research organization for HPE, Hewlett Packard Labs' purpose is to deliver breakthrough technologies that provide a competitive advantage for the company, by investing in fundamental areas of interest to HPE and getting the resulting technologies ready for adoption. The AI Research Lab (AIRL) focuses on applied ML research and applications of interest to HPE and HPE's customers. AIRL's research focuses on Reinforcement Learning applications in sustainability, digital twins, complex scientific applications (like fusion energy), LLMs, trustworthy and responsible AI, and the data foundation infrastructure for AI. We are seeking highly qualified candidates to join our team as a machine learning research engineer. We are interested in individuals with a background in machine learning, time series analysis, reinforcement learning and Digital twins. Digital twin applications require a strong engineering background with an aptitude to model physical systems. The ideal candidate demonstrates an entrepreneurial interest in creating new products and technologies with a fluency in system level analysis and design. We expect all our team members to provide thought leadership and technical influence internally and externally, take innovative ideas and make them real – contributing along the full range from conception, to design, development, implementation, evaluation, and technology transfer. The ideal candidate thrives in an applied research environment, managing risk, and balancing management responsibilities with technical and scientific contributions, and brings such contributions to practice. We expect the successful candidate to collaborate with Hewlett Packard Labs’ research teams, with external partners, and to work in alignment with HPE's broader innovation community. Excellent software systems building skills, understanding of state-of-the-art AI/ML platforms and familiarity with technology and applications of digital twins are a significant plus.The ideal candidate develops and programs integrated software algorithms to structure, analyze and leverage structured and unstructured data in product and systems applications. Can work with large scale computing frameworks, data analysis systems, and modeling environments. Uses machine learning and statistical modeling techniques to improve product/system performance. Formulates descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive insights/algorithms and translates technical specifications into code. Applies, optimizes and scales deep learning technologies and algorithms to give computers the capability to visualize, learn and respond to complex situations.
