Assistant Director of Nursing - Mental Health

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Director of Nursing (with a specialism in Psychiatry) to join our team at Nua Healthcare and take a lead role in providing high quality, biopsychosocial informed care for a cohort of patients with mental disorder within our mental health service.

The successful candidate will be afforded all necessary training and development in line with the role.


Responsibilities

* Ensure ICPs are up to date and that services are delivered to the highest possible quality and safety standards.
* Adhere to local safety statements (risk assessments and standard operating procedures) at all times.
* Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
* Use company IT systems as instructed and protect passwords and data in line with GDPR.
* Act responsibly and cooperate with regulators in the best interests of the service and the people who use them.
* Maintain the highest level of infection control standards in line with policy and best practice.
* Work according to the NMBI Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines; assess care needs and develop, implement, and evaluate programmes of care; support the nursing team in this role; develop, implement, and evaluate individual care plans with patients, carers where relevant, and other professionals.


Clinical Responsibilities

* Provide nursing assessment of patients admitted to the service.
* Prepare for and participate in ward rounds and multi-professional meetings; support the nursing team in these roles.
* Ensure high standards of nursing in clinical procedures and treatments including custody, storage and administration of medicines.
* Maintain high standards of nursing care during procedures through supervision and instruction.
* Ensure patients' rights are maintained under the Mental Health Act.
* Assist the Director of Nursing to ensure staff are aware of individual care plans and objectives and activities to be undertaken.
* Complete supervision and appraisals of junior staff; take charge of the Centre in the Director of Nursing's absence.
* Provide leadership within the service to ensure sound organisation, communication, and team relationships.
* Inform the Director of Nursing of any professional issues as necessary in line with NMBI codes of conduct and support investigations, as necessary.
* Assist with planning and preparation for MHC visits and inspections.
* Lead collaboration with outside agencies to ensure effective communication across services.

Qualifications and Knowledge

* Registered on, or eligible to be on, the Psychiatric Division of the NMBI.
* Post-registration qualification in healthcare management (QQI Level 8 or higher) or working towards and/or equivalent may be an advantage, or a contractual undertaking to acquire within 3 years from the date of appointment.
* Knowledge and familiarity with the Health Act 2007, Mental Health Act 2001 and Mental Health Amendment Act 2018, Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, and related standards and codes of practice.


Experience and Skills

* A minimum of 5+ years post-qualification/registration psychiatric nursing experience.
* A minimum of 3+ years in a management position within psychiatric nursing.
* Empathy, strong personal development drive, excellent organizational and IT skills.
* Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team; willingness to learn; reliability and flexibility.
