Nature of Work
The Senior Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineer is responsible for developing engineering plans, specifications, and estimates for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Electrical scopes. The incumbent reviews plans for engineering accuracy, adequacy, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This position also involves project management, contract administration, and assistance to other disciplines with plans and designs of roads, structures, bridges, tunnels, harbor and port facilities, land development, and related projects. Responsibilities include:
Supervise a team of ITS consultants in the planning, design, coordination, and implementation of ITS programs such as toll and security systems, fiber‑optic cabling, tunnel control systems, collision‑detection systems, traffic‑count devices, dynamic message signs, control systems for movable bridges, fiber‑optic networks, and two‑way radio systems.
Assist the ITS Manager in identifying projects for inclusion in the ITS Program.
Write engineering specifications.
Assign work and review that of ITS team members.
Develop and maintain task and project schedules.
Track and manage budgets for ITS projects.
Estimate quantities and costs of materials, equipment, and labor.
Prepare engineering reports.
Coordinate with other MDTA disciplines.
Communicate answers to contractors in response to Requests for Information.
May manage small and less complex projects from beginning to completion.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Seven (7) years of professional engineering experience. Two (2) years of this experience must be in the design and management of Intelligent Transportation Systems projects.
Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
Possession of a Master’s degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of non‑supervisory experience. Persons registered as Professional Engineers in Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.
