Description
Role
The Global Engineering Strategy team (GES) is looking for a results‑oriented, inventive Senior Mechanical Engineer with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) expertise to drive thermal modelling and cooling system design for new and expanding data centre developments across EMEA.
You will lead CFD modelling and analysis for data centre cooling systems, providing simulation‑driven insights that inform mechanical design decisions, optimise airflow and thermal performance, and support the delivery of energy‑efficient facilities. You will sit within the Design Engineering team of the broader Data Center Engineering (DCE) organisation and work with Mechanical Engineering, Construction, Operations, Commissioning, Pre‑Construction, and Environmental/Sustainability teams on design strategy and implementation across the EMEA region, serving as the CFD subject‑matter expert.
We expect you to provide support and mentorship within the wider DCE engineering community, offering creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions and having fun doing it.
Key Responsibilities
Strong technical leadership, prioritizing well, communicating clearly, and delivering consistently.
Provide creative engineering solutions balanced with high quality and customer focus.
Work as part of a global team to accomplish our goals.
Perform technical design and simulation work across multiple EMEA regions.
Thrive in a fast‑paced environment with evolving design requirements.
Lead through ambiguity, proposing and validating multiple design approaches.
Understand and apply best practices for data centre mechanical system designs.
Mentor junior engineers in CFD workflows and simulation best practices.
Deliver CFD‑driven design outcomes in mission‑critical or large‑scale facilities.
Perform CFD models on innovative cooling designs, including airflow distribution, thermal performance, and cooling efficiency studies.
Select and validate appropriate simulation methodologies for data centre thermal environments.
Perform building energy use calculations to determine capacity and type of cooling system required.
Perform water efficiency use calculations to determine quantity of water needed on site.
Provide reports to senior leadership on simulation results, with clear visualisation and interpretation of data.
Work with global mechanical engineering teams to achieve alignment of design and CFD modelling standards.
Drive process improvements across the organisation, creating automation scripts and tools to improve throughput.
Support rollout of new cooling strategies and design standards.
Collaborate with other DCE teams to assess how cooling designs and products can be deployed across various site development projects.
Ability to work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
Travel occasionally (not more than 25%).
Basic Qualifications
Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment.
Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, REVIT, BIM 360, etc.).
Demonstrated experience with industry CFD software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, CFX, OpenFOAM, 6SigmaDCX, or equivalent).
Experience performing HVAC or thermal system CFD analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment or mass production.
Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
Experience using a variety of web‑based and other software tools for calculation and data processing.
Experience mentoring or training the engineering community on complex technical issues.
Chartered Engineer (CEng/IEng) with a relevant UK/Irish institution, or equivalent international professional registration (e.g., EUR ING).
Familiarity with European/UK building codes and standards (e.g., BS EN, CIBSE guides, Building Regulations Part L).
Master's degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline.
Proficiency in scripting/programming (Python, C++, or similar).
Experience with free‑cooling, water‑side economiser, and indirect evaporative cooling system design.
Prior consulting or project management experience.
