You will apply your knowledge of alignment design and permanent way principles to help deliver safe, pragmatic and high‑quality outcomes for clients, while taking responsibility for allocated technical scope with a high degree of autonomy across complex project environments.Working within a dynamic multidisciplinary rail design environment, you will collaborate closely with project managers, technical specialists and client teams on commissions that may include major stations, depot projects and other single‑ or multi‑discipline rail schemes. The role offers the opportunity to broaden your experience from feasibility and optioneering through detailed design and construction support, while also taking greater responsibility for technical quality, mentoring junior engineers and contributing to the continued growth of Arcadis’ rail capability in Ireland.AccountabilitiesLead the delivery of defined permanent way design tasks and work packages across multiple stages of the project lifecycle, including feasibility, optioneering, design development, detailed design and construction support.Apply sound engineering judgement in the development of permanent way design solutions, including alignment design, plain line, S&C and gauging, to produce safe, pragmatic and client‑focused outcomes.Take responsibility for the preparation, coordination, checking and review of drawings, calculations, reports and other technical deliverables, ensuring accuracy, quality and compliance with project requirements and applicable standards.Coordinate interfaces with wider rail systems, civils, structures, signalling, project delivery and other design disciplines to support fully integrated and constructible engineering solutions.Apply safe‑by‑design principles and support compliance with relevant health, safety and design risk management requirements, including CDM‑related design considerations where applicable.Support the use of digital tools and common data environments in the management and development of project information, including Bentley permanent way applications and ProjectWise where applicable.Plan and manage assigned work efficiently, taking ownership of delivery to programme, quality and budget requirements, while maintaining awareness of scope, change and efficient delivery to support overall project performance.Provide guidance, checking support and technical mentoring to graduate, assistant and junior engineers, helping develop capability, confidence and consistency within the team, and supporting the review of their outputs where appropriate.Liaise effectively with project teams, technical leaders, clients and other stakeholders to communicate progress, address issues and support timely resolution of design and delivery matters.Contribute to technical innovation, continuous improvement and the development of efficient design and delivery approaches across permanent way engineering activities.Qualifications & ExperienceEssentialDegree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.Experience working on rail or infrastructure projects within a design and engineering environment, with demonstrable experience in permanent way design delivery.Strong understanding of permanent way principles, including alignment design, plain line, S&C and gauging.Ability to produce and review technical reports and engineering outputs to a high standard of technical accuracy and presentation.Awareness of relevant railway standards applicable to permanent way engineering design.Ability to work effectively in dynamic multidisciplinary teams with a hands‑on approach to technical project delivery.Working towards, or already holding, Incorporated or Chartered status through a recognised institution such as the Permanent Way Institution, Institution of Mechanical Engineers or Institution of Civil Engineers.DesirableExperience of project delivery in 3D BIM environments and common data environments such as ProjectWise.Experience using Bentley permanent way design applications such as BRT or OpenRail.Some understanding of track componentry, installation techniques and construction‑stage considerations.Exposure to design interfaces, staging, constructability or technical assurance activities on multidisciplinary rail schemes.Experience supporting client‑facing design reviews, technical coordination or multidisciplinary rail delivery.Commitment to Equality, Diversity, Inclusion & BelongingWe want you to be able to bring your best self to work every day, which is why we take equality and inclusion seriously and hold ourselves to account for our actions.
