Post Summary: Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, St. James’s Hospital, and the HSE Public Health Laboratory Dublin seek to appoint an Associate Professor / Consultant Microbiologist. The post will be based mainly in the academic Department of Clinical Microbiology at St. James’s Hospital, with presence at the Trinity Centre for Health Sciences, Tallaght University Hospital, and the Public Health Laboratory Dublin, located in Cherry Orchard Hospital.

The successful applicant will have developed a research programme in clinical microbiology relevant to the activities of the departments in which the postholder will be working and will be expected to provide leadership in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the Discipline of Clinical Microbiology, including the Department’s MSc in Healthcare Infection, in addition to clinical responsibilities. This post offers an exciting opportunity to lead in the development of the Discipline in areas such as microbial pathogenicity, microbial genomics, host‑pathogen interaction, antimicrobial resistance, laboratory diagnostics of infections, infection control, and public health microbiology.

Salary

The appointment will be on the Associate Professor / Consultant, Public Only Consultant Contract (POCC23)– Academic, salary scale at a point in line with current Government pay policy and commensurate with experience. See: https://healthservice.hse.ie/staff/pay/pay-scales/

Professional experience required

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate the following:


Teaching

* A strong background in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate course content in Microbiology and Infection.
* Evidence of a personal contribution and commitment to excellence in teaching.
* Experience of using digital teaching media.
* Experience of working collaboratively and effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
* Experience in curriculum development would be an advantage, including the development of new modules and teaching materials.
* Experience supervising postgraduate students/fellows in areas important to the Discipline’s course provision.


Research

* A strong track record of clinical research relevant to the role.
* A strong publication record in international peer‑review journals.
* Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across the Discipline, School, College, and affiliated hospitals as well as in Ireland and internationally, as appropriate for the development of their research.
* Proven ability to attract research funding and to build and maintain a successful research team would be a significant advantage.


Administration

* Ability to undertake administrative responsibilities, including at some time point act as Head of Discipline, as required by the Discipline, School, College, and hospital.
* Proven experience in designing, planning and implementing academic programmes in a university setting.
* Ability to represent the School, College, and hospital on appropriate national and international advisory boards and professional bodies.
* Experience of organising research seminars and other activities.


Other essential attributes

* Ability to lead a professional team with a collaborative leadership style.
* Ability to work effectively as member of a team.
* Honesty and integrity.


Desirable

* Applicants will ideally have MRCPI (or equivalent).

Qualification required

The following qualifications shall apply to this appointment:

* Registration in Microbiology in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland.
* The successful interviewee must be registered as a Specialist in the relevant specialty on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland before taking up appointment. The candidate will be allowed a maximum of 180 calendar days from date of interview to secure this registration and produce evidence of special interest training where relevant. Should the successful candidate not be registered as a Specialist at that time, the post may be offered to the next suitable candidate (or, in the case of HSE posts, the Public Appointments Service may choose not to recommend that candidate to the employer). Should no suitable candidate exist, a further recruitment process may be initiated.
* The candidate must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the post and be in a state of health such that a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service is indicated.
* The possession of the FRCPath or equivalent qualifications.
* A higher degree: either MD or PhD.
* Maintain professional competence on an ongoing basis pursuant to any Medical Council professional competence scheme applicable to the Consultant as a medical practitioner.
