Details of Service
Cork University Hospital (CUH) has approximately 800 beds, increasing to 1,000 beds upon the transfer of additional services. CUH employs around 3,269 staff across multiple professions and is the primary teaching hospital for the Faculty of Health and Science at University College Cork (UCC). UCC is the academic partner of the South/South West Hospital Group. CUH maintains strong relationships with the six schools within UCC's Science Faculty, fostering future development opportunities for both service and academia.
CUH is a recommended Major Trauma Centre for Ireland, offering a wide range of specialties including Neurosciences, Cardiac Services, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Renal, Internal Medicine, Vascular, Ophthalmology, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial, Paediatrics, Intensive Care, Oncology, Haematology, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Neonatology, and Emergency Medicine.
It serves as the tertiary referral centre for the HSE Southern area and the supra-regional areas of Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Waterford, and Kilkenny, covering a population of approximately 550,000 and a total of 1.1 million for secondary and tertiary care.
Six Health Regions will be established based on geographical boundaries, operational from 2024, to enhance planning, resource allocation, and service delivery tailored to local populations. These regions aim to improve accountability, governance, and decision-making at the local level, making services more integrated, accessible, and closer to home.
The HSE South West health region will oversee all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry, including:

* Cork Kerry Community Healthcare
* Midlands Louth Meath Community Health Organisation
* Dublin North City and County Community Healthcare Organisation
This region also aligns with the Department of Population and Public Health. From 3rd March 2025, the South / South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare will become part of the HSE South West health region, with transition activities throughout 2025.

Acute Medical Decision Unit
The Acute Floor includes the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Assessment Unit, Medical Short Stay Unit, and the Acute Medical Decision Unit. Acutely unwell medical patients are admitted 24/7 with an estimated stay of less than 72 hours. The unit emphasizes multidisciplinary teamwork, prompt assessment, and treatment. The role requires strong leadership and team skills.
Purpose of the Post
The CNM 2 position plays a key role in service planning, activity coordination, and resource management within the clinical area. Responsibilities include quality assurance, staffing, staff development, practice development, communication facilitation, and clinical leadership.
