OverviewThe Clinical Facilitator – Cath Lab Department (Cardiology) is responsible for enhancing patient outcomes by assessing standards of nursing and health care assistant practice, planning and implementing appropriate education and professional development. The role promotes continuous practice development through collaboration, networking, and effective relationship building, and provides a quality educational and supportive service to Cardiology Ward (Level 3) and Cath Lab nursing staff.ResponsibilitiesCoordinate and manage up‑to‑date educational/clinical programmes for relevant staff, supporting RN's to develop necessary skills for skilled nursing care.Facilitate the training of all Cath Lab staff in Code Blue and preparation for ACLS courses.Supervise preceptees working in clinical practice with patients, ensuring they complete the Cath Lab Training Program within the agreed timeframe (3–6 months).Maintain a regular schedule of education and professional development, and record keeping in accordance with professional standards.Adhere to and contribute to the development and maintenance of nursing standards, protocols and guidelines consistent with the highest standards of patient care.Promote guidelines for safety and best practice as outlined by the Hospital policies, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, and relevant legislation (Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, Data Protection Act 1988 and 2003).Engage directly in clinical practice to keep pace with changes and provide enabling processes for staff to achieve their goals.Support the Clinical Adaptation Programme and Cath Lab Clinical Program: be knowledgeable about the programme, coordinate orientation weeks, and ensure learning outcomes and competencies are achieved.Serve as a first‑line contact for candidates and staff nurse assessors, providing practical clinical support, evidence‑based practice, and guidance on placement issues.Maintain regular clinical presence, encouraging teaching and learning opportunities in the Cath Lab.Communicate with nurse managers and coordinators to coordinate preceptors and nurture safe, efficient assessment of candidates.Work closely with Clinical Nurse Specialists to deliver education on intervention, structural, and EP procedures, ensuring the Cath Lab Training Program is completed.Assist with developing policies, protocols, guidelines, and clinical competencies, and facilitate continuing education programmes to meet nurses' competency development needs.Lead multidisciplinary committees, attend relevant meetings, and liaise with staff to receive suggestions and maintain open communication.Manage own workload efficiently, fostering a supportive working environment through effective leadership and communication.Promote a culture of diversity, respect, and continuous learning; contribute to audit of clinical practice and quality improvement initiatives.Coordinate risk identification, risk debriefing, and staff preparation for ACLS/Code Blue, including monthly mock Code Blue sessions.Qualified Experience & KnowledgeRegistered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses with An Bord Altranais (NMBI).Postgraduate degree or equivalent in Cardiology Nursing; Master’s in Clinical Practice or similar desirable.Minimum of 10 years of acute experience, with at least 7 years in a cardiology/Cath Lab setting.Experience in teaching, assessing and auditing nursing and HCA teams over the past decade.Strong knowledge of best practice policy, nursing standards, and patient safety guidelines.Demonstrated skills in leadership, communication, analytical decision‑making, and commitment to continuous professional development.Evidence of educational award at Level 8 or higher from Quality and Qualifications Ireland or equivalent.Expectations & OutcomesFull-time commitment with 75% of the time spent working directly with staff (29.25 hours/week) and 25% for administrative and facilitation tasks (9.75 hours/week).Ensure all preceptees and staff achieve competency outcomes within set timelines, maintaining clinical credibility and leading to improved patient care.Maintain professional standards, confidentiality, ethics, and legal compliance in all activities.Act as a role model for continuous learning and practice development, facilitating knowledge transfer and competency enhancement across the department.
