Clerk of Works - Marine Project
Location: Connemara / Inis Oirr, Galway.
Contract: 24 months (commencing early 2026)
Site hours: 8am—6pm.

Optimize Recruitment is proud to present an exciting high-profile opportunity for an experienced Clerk of Works to join a small team of Resident Engineers on the Pier Improvements Design & Build Project on the island of Inis Oírr.
About the Role
Working closely with the Senior Resident Engineer, you will play a key role in the supervision and delivery of this major marine project. The role involves both island-based and mainland supervision duties, with accommodation provided in Connemara for the duration of the contract.
Team & Work Structure
* RE team based in a rented house in Connemara (3–4 nights per week optional stay).
* 1–2 nights per week on Inis Oírr in the early stages, rising to up to 4 nights thereafter.
* 3–4 full days per week on the island, overlapping with another RE team member daily.
* 1–2 days per week supervising quarrying, casting, and transhipping facilities in Connemara.
* Typical working hours: 8am–6pm (flexibility required).
Skills & Requirements
Essential
* Diploma in Engineering or Construction Management (Level 6 NFQ or equivalent), membership of the Institute of Clerks of Works in Ireland, or equivalent qualification.
* 10+ years’ postgraduate experience in civil engineering works, including 7+ years’ site-based experience (bridge, marine, or civil works).
* Proven experience as a Clerk of Works within a Resident Engineer team (or equivalent).
* Strong knowledge of H&S legislation and construction best practices.
* Excellent organisational, record-keeping, and report-writing skills.
* Ability to interpret drawings, measure works, and monitor variations.
* Good knowledge of surveying, levelling, and setting out.
Desirable
* Proficiency in spoken Gaeilge (to communicate with island residents on non-technical matters).
* Safe Pass certification (mandatory before start date).
* Experience in concrete sampling and testing.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the Senior Resident Engineer in liaising with contractors, clients, and stakeholders.
* Ensure adequate site supervision and compliance with contract specifications.
* Review contractor claims, payment applications, and method statements.
* Monitor construction progress and report against programme.
* Oversee compliance with licences, traffic management plans, and safety protocols.
* Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and manage contractual documentation.
* Ensure works are carried out to required standards in accordance with drawings and specifications.
