Job Overview
The State Highway Administration's Office of Transportation Mobility & Operations is recruiting for an ITS Technician I. The role supports the SOC CHART Program and SHA’s statewide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), fiber, and radio communication systems. Duties include providing technical support, troubleshooting, repairs, maintenance, and procurement for Voice, Data, RF Communications, Wireless Systems Design, Integration, Installation, Maintenance, Digital and Fiber Optic Transmissions, and ITS equipment such as Speed Detectors, Highway Advisory Radios, CCTV Traffic Cameras, Dynamic Message Signs, Weather Stations, and Lane Control Signals.
The position is statewide, reporting daily to the primary ITS Division office at 5901 Baltimore National Pike, Catonsville, MD, but may be reassigned to regional duties. Work requires on‑highway activity with exposure to traffic and an essential 24/7/365 emergency call‑out schedule.
Responsibilities
Provide technical expertise to SOC CHART Program and statewide ITS, fiber, and radio communication systems.
Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and procure equipment across Voice, Data, RF Communications, Wireless Systems, Fiber Optic Transmissions, and ITS devices.
Support on‑highway installations and maintenance, including work at elevated structures.
Respond to emergency call‑outs 24/7/365 as an essential employee.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalency.
Experience: One (1) year repairing electronic communication equipment.
Applicants may substitute:
A one‑year radio electronics program from a recognized training school, trade school, or college.
An FCC General Radiotelephone Operator's License (provide license number and issue date).
Licenses & Certifications:
Valid Maryland motor vehicle operator's license.
Class B Maryland Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or comparable out‑of‑state CDL, obtained within 12 months of employment.
Special Requirements:
Essential Employee status with required policies and procedures.
24‑hour on‑call availability; provide reachable phone number.
Ability to climb and work at elevated structures.
Substance abuse testing per Maryland regulations; pre‑employment drug testing required.
