Overview
The Women & Infant’s Directorate for Maternity, Neonatology and Gynaecology is located in University Hospital Kerry, a Model 3 hospital. UHK has approximately 1,100 births per annum and serves as a tertiary referral centre to Cork University Maternity Hospital within Ireland South.
University Hospital Kerry delivers maternity services within HSE South West, Ireland South Women’s and Infants Directorate, based on principles of partnership and integration. The centre supports multidisciplinary team involvement, hosts clinical placements for student midwives and nurses in partnership with University College Cork, University Of Limerick and Munster Technological University, and incorporates the MN‑CMS (Maternal Newborn Clinical Management System) into patient care.
Purpose of the post
The individual will undertake the academic preparation and develop the clinical and leadership skills, competencies and knowledge required to become a registered Advanced Midwife Practitioner (RAMP) with the NMBI. The role is designed to build incremental expertise; as such it cannot deliver care as an autonomous practitioner at present. The overall purpose of the post is to provide safe, timely, evidence‑based midwife‑led care to patients at an advanced midwifery level, documenting complete episodes of patient care (assess, diagnose, plan, treat, discharge) according to collaboratively agreed protocols and scope of practice.
Responsibilities
Manage a caseload of women with threatened miscarriage and miscarriage, suspected or confirmed ectopic pregnancies, pregnancy of unknown location (PUL), post‑management follow‑up, recurrent miscarriage (RM), and other related conditions.
Provide bereavement support, clinical triage and referrals to gynaecology, mental health and community services.
Communicate clearly and compassionately regarding results, next steps, recovery expectations and when to seek urgent care for affected women.
Conduct telephone or in‑person follow‑up consultations to assess physical and emotional recovery.
Refer patients to gynaecology, mental health, bereavement counselling, fertility services or the pregnancy‑loss clinic as appropriate.
Escalate care for women with ongoing symptoms such as retained pregnancy tissue, bleeding or molar pregnancy.
Develop a pregnancy‑after‑loss clinic incorporating a pre‑conceptual consultation component.
Develop a home‑visit pathway for families following stillbirth.
Provide clinical leadership and professional scholarship to advance midwifery practice and health policy locally, regionally and nationally.
Contribute to midwifery research to shape and advance practice, education and health‑care policy at national and international levels.
