Role Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Midwife for locum placement within the acute maternity services at Letterkenny Hospital.

This role requires a confident, autonomous practitioner capable of managing labour ward activity within a busy acute environment. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong clinical judgement, escalation skills, and the ability to function independently within multidisciplinary maternity teams.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must:

* Be registered in the Midwifery Division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland
* Hold a current NMBI PIN
* Have a minimum of 3+ years post-registration midwifery experience within an acute maternity setting
* Demonstrate substantial experience in a busy Labour Ward environment
* Be compliant with all mandatory acute training requirements
* Hold the right to work in Ireland

Clinical Competencies

Candidates must demonstrate advanced competency in:

* Independent management of labour and delivery, including high-risk and augmented labours
* Advanced CTG interpretation and fetal monitoring
* Recognition and escalation of maternal and fetal deterioration
* Leadership in obstetric emergencies, including:
* Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH)
* Pre-eclampsia / Eclampsia
* Shoulder Dystocia
* Cord Prolapse
* Immediate neonatal assessment and initial stabilisation at birth
* Safe administration of maternity-specific and emergency medications
* Management of high-dependency antenatal and postnatal patients
* Participation in multidisciplinary emergency responses
* Accurate, defensible documentation in line with maternity governance standards

Professional & Leadership Competencies

* Ability to function autonomously within a high-demand acute unit
* Strong prioritisation and clinical decision-making skills
* Experience supporting junior staff and students where required
* Clear communication with women, families, obstetricians, anaesthetics, and neonatal teams
* Accountability aligned with NMBI professional standards
