Clinical Nurse Specialist Medical Oncology – Limerick Cancer Centre

Overview of Role
The CNS in Medical Oncology will provide expert nursing care and support to patients diagnosed with cancer undergoing systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT).
They will act as a key liaison between patients, families and multidisciplinary teams, ensuring continuity of care, symptom management and psychosocial support throughout the cancer journey.
The CNS will work closely with medical, nursing and other MDT members to ensure evidence-based practice and will maintain a clinical database of patients and outcomes.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Act as the primary point of contact for out-patient patients, including telephone triage using the UKONS"Tool.
Provide direct patient assessment, plan and deliver care, monitor response to treatment and adjust care plans with the MDT.
Identify and promote symptom-management strategies and provide self-management education.
Coordinate investigations, treatments and follow-up, including nurse-led clinics.
Maintain accurate clinical records and documentation in line with hospital policy and national standards.
Participate in case review and case management of patients with complex needs.
Lead the development and implementation of clinical standards and guidelines for oncology nursing.
Contribute to audit, research and quality improvement projects and report findings to the organisation.
Represent the specialist service at local, national and international forums.
Qualifications & Experience
Registered nurse on the active register of Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or eligible to register.
Minimum 4 years post-registration experience in specialist cancer care.
Advanced nursing qualification – Higher Diploma or postgraduate course in oncology or equivalent.
Competence in IV/Oral chemotherapy administration, CVAD maintenance and venepuncture.
Full, live annual registration and confirmation of registration with the NMBI.
Evidence of ongoing professional development and achievement of professional standards.

In-depth knowledge of oncology nursing, SACT and safe chemotherapy administration.
Strong clinical governance, risk management and quality improvement skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including health-promotion and patient education.
Organisational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and hospital information systems.
