Directorate overview
The Surgery, Anaesthesia and Critical Care Directorate (SACC) focuses on the surgical patient process from outpatients through to discharge. Core principles are based around delivering a safe, personal, clinically effective and high quality service to all patients, with clear accountability for all staff members.
St. James’s Hospital delivers a wide range of surgical services at a local, regional and national level.
There are 13 Specialities within SACC. These are; Urology, Gynaecology, General Surgery, ENT, Breast Care, Maxillofacial, Vascular, Plastics, Orthopaedics, Cardiothoracic, Pain Management, Anaesthesia and Critical Care.
The directorate is managed by the Directorate Management Team led by Clinical Director and Operations Manager. Regular engagement with the Clinical Teams through Leads for each Speciality has been a big focus in 2015, with the establishment of Monthly Speciality Meetings. The main purpose of these was to improve communication, address operational issues and at a strategic level, set out a development plan for each service.
Service overview
Gynaecological care is provided for women attending other departments at SJH including other oncology services, haematology, hepatology, dermatology (including national epidermolysis service), MedEl and infectious diseases. Emergency gynaecological care is provided to the A&E Department. Emergency and surveillance obstetric care is provided for pregnant patients attending other departments and high risk obstetric patients requiring intensive (e.g. sepsis & extreme haemorrhage) or other high level multidisciplinary care.
The ethos of the Gynaecology Service is to provide best patient focused care, within a strong multidisciplinary framework. There is commitment to evidence based practice and professional development.
Principal duties and responsibilities
Professional / Clinical
The Post Holder Will
* Be responsible for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment for patients according to professional standards and under the supervision of the Consultant
* Document all assessments, diagnoses, treatments, clinical notes, relevant contacts and summaries in accordance with department and professional standards
* Communicate results of assessments and recommendations to the patient and relevant others as appropriate
* Foster close working relationships with colleagues and other relevant professionals in maximising the patient’s potential
* Participate in teams, communicating and working in collaboration with the patient and other team members as part of an integrated package of care
* Attend clinics and participate in relevant meetings, case conferences and ward rounds; followed by documentation of findings on each patient’s chart; follow through with actions arising from the round
* In conjunction with the Supervising Consultant, contribute to the development and implementation of procedures, policies and guidelines while adhering to existing standards and protocols
* Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation
* Seek advice and assistance from the Consultant with any assigned cases or issues that prove to be beyond the scope of his / her professional competence in line with principles of best practice and clinical governance

Essential
Eligibility criteria qualifications and/ or experience
Must hold General Registration or Trainee Specialist Division Registration with the Irish Medical Council
* Relevant experience in order to discharge the functions of the role
* Possession of a post-graduate qualification (eg MCEM, MRCS, MRCP), will be advantageous to the candidate, but is not a requirement for the post
* Candidates are expected to be ATLS or ACLS providers

Proficiency in the English language
A level of proficiency in the English language, written and spoken, is a requirement of all roles within St James’s Hospital. Your proficiency in spoken English will be assessed during the interview process appropriate to the role available. Nursing and other general staff will be required to self-assess their proficiency level in the Standard Application Form.

* The Hospital Board will not be responsible for the loss or theft of personal belongings.
* Fire orders must be observed and staff must complete fire training every 2 years.
* All accidents within the department must be reported immediately.
* In accordance with the “Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005”, all staff must comply with all safety regulations.
