Can you make an invaluable contribution to European climate action? Applications are invited for a post-doctoral / senior post-doctoral research position in the MaREI Centre in University College Cork (UCC), based at the UCC Sustainability Institute’s Beaufort Building in Ringaskiddy. MaREI is the Research Ireland Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine, coordinated by UCC’s Sustainability Institute, which is an internationally recognised Institute for environmental research dedicated to the understanding and protection of our natural environment and to developing innovative technologies, tools and services to facilitate a transformation to a zero carbon and resource efficient society.
The MaREI Centre is headquartered in the UCC Sustainability Institute and includes 13 other academic institutions, as well as industrial partners. It combines the expertise of a wide range of research groups and industry partners, with the shared mission of solving the main scientific, technical and socio-economic challenges across the climate, energy and marine spaces. Researchers in the MaREI Centre have over 30 years of experience in conducting fundamental and applied research supported by competitively won national and international funding, and commercial contracts with government agencies and industry. MaREI’s strengths lie in the multi-disciplinary nature of its research teams, allowing it to combine insights across a number of thematic areas (see www.marei.ie for more information).
We are seeking a post-doctoral or senior post-doctoral climate scientist with experience in climate action (mitigation / adaptation), climate neutrality,risk perception governanceparticularly in relation to public bodies and EU partners. The role will include collaborating with project partners in making a significant contribution to EU climate policy, actions and future research directions.
The successful candidate will be part of a research team contributing to several projects in the centre including the MAGICA project ( https://magica-project.eu/ ), a landmark initiative funded under EU Horizon programme. The MAGICA project aims to accelerate the development, provision and exchange of knowledge from research and innovation to inform and support policy-making and climate actions. It will do this via improved coordination of on-going and future climate initiatives at transnational, national and regional levels and the more efficient application of resources. Specifically, the successful candidate will work across the scientific and societal components of climate and environmental research with emphasis on the physical, and social and economic impacts of climate change.
The main tasks include but are not limited to:
* Assessing existing and exploring new ways of collaboration between EU Members States and associated countries
* Investigating and promoting the role of science in recent and emerging climate policy framings
* Innovating climate knowledge exchange and transfer to enable societal transformation
* Explore case studies related to regionalized contributions of past and future drivers of sea level
* Consider impacts of sea level rise on European coasts, coastal erosion and marine habitat loss, risk perception and socio-economic impacts of sea level rise

Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEI Researcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Associatio n
This role provides the opportunity to join an exciting transdisciplinary team of researchers in MaREI, and to work at a pan-European scale to deliver an innovative programme of research. The candidate should have relevant experience and knowledge of physical, economic and societal aspects of climate action on key ecosystems, be familiar with the EU policy landscape and governance mechanisms. Candidates should have a track record in working in project-based environments, stakeholder engagement and preferably be familiar with the European research funding ecosystem. For the senior post-doctoral position, candidates should and enhanced track record and have demonstrable experience of leading delivering on research work tasks, preferably in an EU or equivalent multi-partner project environment.
Candidates should be self-motivated with ability to conduct independent research to a very high level and will be expected to contribute to the development of new research efforts, grants, and publications. The appointee will have significant experience of working with diverse teams including external actors.
* To lead partnerships within the MAGICA project partners and EU consortium to ensure timely achievement of project deliverables and milestones, including regularly attending meetings with some or all partners, both remotely and in-person.
* To provide leadership and effectively and collaboratively with MaREI colleagues on a range of MaREI projects including the management and co-ordination of the MAGICA project, and to proactively lead on and shape the development of certain aspects of that work.
* To conduct and lead a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader.
* To secure competitive research funding for research proposals
* To engage in appropriate and professional development opportunities as required by your Principal Investigator, School or College.
* To assume a role in the design as well as the execution of research, contributing significantly to the development of research proposals and funding successes.
* To support the Principal Investigator and research group in the design and development of a research programme.
* To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research, as directed by and with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
* To engage in the wider research activities of the Research Group, School or College.
* To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day to day research in conjunction with the supervisor or supervision team.
* To conduct administrative and management work associated with the research project.
* To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
* To engage in costing research grant proposals and take on financial management of projects.
Specific Requirements
* A relevant PhD qualification preferably in the areas of climate projections and associated impacts, climate action (adaptation / mitigation), climate neutrality, economics or policy.
* Proven research project experience and delivery, focussed on climate science, climate action with respect to policy implementation.
* Demonstratable experience in producing deliverables with a multi-partner project environment.
* In depth knowledge of National and European climate policy.
* Demonstrable experience of working EU projects (or equivalent) preferably in the climate action sphere.
* Experience with, and knowledge of, EU funding programmes.
* Designing and implementing stakeholder engagement events.
* Extensive competence and experience in a research area.
* Supervisory skills.
* Leadership potential.
* Experience of applying for and securing funding.
Post-Doctoral Researcher:

* Demonstrable experience of playing a leading role in the delivery of multi-partner European Projects.
* Strong project management experience including monitoring of project deliverables, timelines and budget.
* Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
* Experience in liaising with external project partners and engaging with stakeholders, including citizens and communities.
