Electrical & Controls Design Engineer – R&D
Role Overview
We are looking for an Electrical & Controls Design Engineer to contribute to the development of advanced cooling technologies for high-density data centres, AI/HPC environments, and industrial applications. This R&D-focused role centres on the design and specification of electrical systems, controls architectures, and instrumentation.
You will collaborate closely with mechanical, software, and test engineers to define electrical and controls strategies from early concept stages through prototype build, testing, and validation. The role offers hands-on exposure to next-generation cooling architectures and the opportunity to influence how innovative R&D concepts evolve into scalable, production-ready solutions.
Key Responsibilities – Electrical
1. Design electrical architectures for R&D prototypes and future production systems, including power distribution, control and safety circuits, protective devices, and panel layouts
2. Produce detailed electrical schematics and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical (or equivalent tools)
3. Select and specify electrical components such as relays, breakers, contactors, VSDs, EC fans, actuators, compressors, power supplies, and safety hardware
4. Ensure designs comply with CE requirements and relevant safety standards
5. Support design reviews, risk assessments (FMEA), and the creation of technical documentation and bills of materials (BOMs)
Key Responsibilities – Controls & Instrumentation
6. Define and specify sensors and instrumentation across refrigerant, air, and water systems (temperature, pressure, flow, humidity, differential pressure, level, etc.)
7. Develop controls architecture diagrams, I/O lists, and cable schedules in collaboration with controls and software engineers
8. Provide technical input into control logic, sequencing, and overall system behaviour
9. Assess and support communication protocols and integration methods, including analog and digital I/O, Modbus, BACnet, PWM, and 0–10 V signals
10. Support panel builders and software teams with clear I/O mappings, signal descriptions, and instrumentation specifications
11. Review R&D test data to verify sensor performance and control behaviour, recommending improvements where required
Required Experience
12. Degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline
13. 3+ years' experience in electrical design, controls engineering, or instrumentation
14. Strong ability to design, read, and interpret electrical schematics and control circuits
15. Proven experience selecting and integrating sensors, transducers, and instrumentation
16. Solid understanding of basic control theory
17. Familiarity with VSDs, EC motors, valves, actuators, relays, and industrial digital/analog I/O
18. Ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams (mechanical, software, test)
19. Strong technical documentation and communication skills
Desirable (Not Essential)
20. Exposure to UL standards such as UL, ULA, or UL -2-40
21. Experience within HVAC/R, refrigeration, or other thermodynamic systems
22. Hands-on experience with sensor calibration or data acquisition systems
23. Familiarity with PLC or function block environments (e.g. Carel, WebCTRL)
24. Knowledge of data centre cooling systems and architectures
