Purpose of the Post
The Activities Therapist uses a variety of techniques, including arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, music and community outings to maintain the physical, mental and emotional well‑being of our residents. In conjunction or collaboration with the consultants, nurses, care staff, occupational and other therapists, the Activity Therapist helps reduce depression, stress and anxiety; assists in the recovery of basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities, builds confidence, promotes greater independence, as well as reducing or eliminating the effects of the client’s illness or disability.
Working Hours
This is a full‑time, permanent post working 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.
Reporting Relationship
The post holder reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager and Director of Nursing in Elmhurst Nursing Home.
Duties And Responsibilities
* Organise a range of activities on a daily basis such as reminiscence therapy, multi‑sensory stimulation, arts & crafts and board games.
* Arrange outings for the residents.
* Ensure that activity programmes are organised around the routine of the unit.
* Ensure that all activities are person‑centred, taking into consideration the likes and dislikes of each resident.
* Work closely with occupational therapists and physiotherapists where needed in areas of seating, adaptive equipment, mobility and falls prevention.
Required Qualifications
* One year’s experience working as an Activities Therapist in a nursing home or similar environment.
* Excellent organisation, communication and interpersonal skills.
* Excellent English language skills.
* Flexibility about where they are assigned across the organisation.
Desirable Criteria
* SONAS certificate.
* Comfortable working with Alzheimer's/dementia patients, psychiatric patients or patients with disabilities or other illnesses.
* Patient, tactful and persuasive.
* Sense of humour and good imagination & ingenuity for adapting activities to individual needs.
* Physically fit.
* Flexibility and adaptability.
