This is an appointment to the HSE West & North West on a Public Only Consultants Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Letterkenny University Hospital for 18.5 hours per week and Primary Care Donegal 18.5 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes. This is a New post.
Main Duties of the Job
The Consultant Respiratory and General Physician (Integrated Respiratory Care) will provide clinical leadership for the delivery of integrated respiratory services across County Donegal, with a 50% commitment to community‑based care and a 50% commitment to acute hospital services at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH). This is a new full-time consultant post established to support the development of an integrated respiratory care model that delivers high‑quality, patient‑centred care across primary, community, ambulatory and acute care settings. The postholder will play a pivotal role in the implementation of Sláintecare by leading the development of seamless respiratory care pathways, improving access to specialist services, and ensuring that patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
Responsibilities
Provide clinical, operational, strategic, educational and leadership input across both Letterkenny University Hospital and community‑based respiratory services within Donegal.
Work across the entire patient pathway, supporting the delivery of integrated respiratory care while maintaining a significant role within acute hospital services.
Provide specialist Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine services at Letterkenny University Hospital.
Deliver consultant‑led respiratory outpatient services across both acute and community settings.

The HSE West and North West Region provides acute and specialist hospital services to the West and North West of Ireland – counties Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal and adjoining counties.
The region comprises 7 hospitals across 8 sites and has an academic partnership with NUI Galway.
GUH is a designated supra‑regional tertiary referral centre and service provider meeting the needs of County Donegal.
The Group aims to meet its service plan targets as per the national clinical care programmes.
Appointment Details
The appointment is whole‑time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st June 2026:€238,221 €251,098 €264,691 €271,846 €278,998 €286,151
The standard working week is 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is 30 working days per annum.
