Purpose
The Outside Europe A (OEU-A) Division deals with the legal documentation and legal issues for projects in Neighbourhood Countries (South), Saharan and Sub‑Saharan Africa, Caribbean, Pacific, Asia, Latin America.
The purpose of this position is to provide legal advice and support relating to lending (sovereign/bank/corporate), guarantee transactions, grants and post‑signature work for EIB projects.
Work may involve standard loan agreements as well as more complex structured finance, research on new products, and addressing highly sophisticated legal matters.
Operating Network
The Division consists of 15 people (lawyers and assistants).
The team is friendly with a culture of cooperation and knowledge sharing.
As a Banking and Finance Lawyer you will report to the Head of the OEU‑A Division and cooperate with other team members and the Legal Directorate.
You will also collaborate with other Directorates within the EIB, maintain relationships with external counterparts, and represent the EIB externally.
Accountabilities
Manage contacts and negotiations concerning EIB operations handled by the Division, working with documents subject to numerous jurisdictions and with counterparts in various countries and with internal counterparts in several different areas of the Bank (mainly front office).
Draft documents, provide advisory legal support, finalize contracts, complete all related legal formalities and legal monitoring (including post‑signature events).
Understand and implement in contractual documentation the specificities arising from the various mandates underpinning the Division's activities.
Contribute to the development and implementation of grant documentation and other blending related activities.
Contribute to the development of standard legal documentation within the Division's areas of activity, notably outside of the EU specific documentation.
Work with other team members, including more junior colleagues and paralegals, providing coaching to the extent applicable.
Participate in horizontal activities of relevance to the Division.
Liaise with external consultants and supervise their work.
Conduct legal research on legal matters and developments of significance to the Division's interests.
Proactively keep up to date with legal developments in legislation, regulations and jurisprudence pertaining to the Division's activities.
Develop and maintain relationships within the Bank (including external offices) and represent the EIB externally.
Qualifications
University degree in law (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor and preferably at Master level), preferably obtained in a civil law country (a law degree in Spain would be an advantage).
Legal qualification, ideally in a civil law jurisdiction, would be an advantage.
Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in lending and finance, preferably with a law firm of international repute or an in‑house legal department of a financial institution.
Significant experience in drafting and negotiating loan and finance documentation in English and Spanish is required.
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and Spanish is required.
Good command of French would be an advantage.

Unless stated explicitly as a required qualification, a good command of French is not a pre‑requisite for hire.
As both English and French are however official working languages of the EIB, proficiency in both languages is a pre‑requisite for your future career development.
Any language clause in your contract must be fulfilled in order for you to be eligible for a promotion (either via the annual appraisal cycle or via an internal selection process).
Proficiency is understood to mean the attainment of level 5 of the Inter Institutional language courses, corresponding to B1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
